will be fully grasped. If one does not abandon even things that are not cherished and are unnecessary, then what need is there to mention cherished things? If one engages in many bad deeds even for the sake of a small and merely bad purpose, then what need is there to mention a great purpose? If one is not even pleased to accomplish and enter into the mind of even a small good deed, then what need is there to mention a great one? If one does not even want to hear of nirvana, then what need is there to mention attaining it? For by such means, craving will increase. The term "making firm" means that it is precisely this that makes the bonds firm for sentient beings. The reason it is called firm is that it is difficult to undo even with effort. The bonds become firm in three ways: being very hard, being painful to the touch, and being connected for a long time. In this case, the root of acting badly in the visible dharma is attachment, hatred, and ignorance. This should be understood as a very hard bond. If one knows that one will be born in the lower realms such as hell, one should know that it is painful. Remaining in samsara for a long time should be seen as being connected for a long time. The term "one's own bond" refers to the state of craving, which abides in one's own continuum, as a bond. Or it is the bond of suffering, because from the increase of craving, suffering such as birth occurs repeatedly. Therefore, this is said to show the faults of craving, so that it must be abandoned. To show the image of abandoning craving, it is said, "Those who pacify conceptualization and rejoice," and so on. The meaning of this should be understood as the antidote to the previous verse. Whoever has pacified the conceptualizations of desire and so on, that is the pacification of conceptualization, that is, conceptualizing renunciation and so on. Among them, whoever rejoices is the arising of genuine contentment, as it is said, "The conceptualization of desire arises, not fully cultivated and abandoned, removed and determined." The practice of ugliness meditation means the transformation of the body, that is, focusing inwardly on swelling and putrefaction.

The thought of impurity is called impurity because it is suffering and an object, so cultivate it without reversing it, and repeatedly realize it. The so-called constant mindfulness is to abide in mindfulness at all times. The fear of desire is to abide near and cultivate mindfulness at all times, making it uninterrupted. With tireless diligence, in this way, desire will not find an opportunity. Having been equipped in this way, one will surely abandon craving for a long time. To show this reason, it is said: By it, craving is spoken of, showing that there is no difference on the ground where there is no equal dwelling. Having been truly equipped in this way, as long as the yoga practitioner has not abandoned it, then those decays are to weaken it, that is, to be able to abandon and prevent it. In order to guide to the method of abandoning craving, these were said. To show that suffering such as old age and death will arise for those who have not abandoned craving, it is said: Desire is covered by ignorance like darkness. And so on. Then, the World Honored One knew that the time had come to tame Shakya Goodness and others, and in order to make other particularly outstanding people become monks, he walked from the river. In a place by the river, a large group of people were celebrating a festival, singing and dancing. Near there, many fish were caught, and he saw many calves following the herd of cows, craving milk, so he said to the monks again: Monks, the world is blinded by desire and covered by the net of desire. After speaking extensively in this way, he spoke these two verses. The meaning summarized here is to show the five aspects of the truth of origin and the two aspects of the truth of suffering. What are the five aspects? They are attachment to the objects that arise now, and the discrimination of attachment after recalling and enjoying the past objects, and the desire for future objects, and the greater attachment to those that arise, and that also makes it impossible to do good deeds autonomously. What are the two aspects?
