It is for the sake of prevention. For those who are manifestly delighted in desire and particularly attached to desire, these were spoken in order to turn their intention away from it. Furthermore, to the side of the naked ascetics, they say this: "How can the Shakyas who have abandoned the implements of pleasure be free from attachment?" To those who say this, by showing the faults of desire, they will become free from attachment. It is not by praising the objects that they will be free from attachment, it was spoken to show this. The collection of desires, that is, the explanation of the second chapter is complete. Attachment itself is the ultimate desire, not the object, in order to definitively prove this. Therefore, the collection of attachments is arranged after that. Because, as it is said, the imputation of desire to forms and so on is like the imputation of fire to a Brahmin boy. If so, then, it has already been shown above that "the various worlds are not desire," then, how should one strive for this meaning for that meaning? That is so, but the desire of beings is the attachment of pervasive discrimination, this is explained as the summarized meaning of this. Now, it is a broad explanation of the distinctions, saying "living beings discriminate" and so on. The origin of this occurrence is that the Bhagavan said to the monks: These three are children, not endowed with hearing, they are ordinary people who discriminate about sinful non-virtue. What are the three? They are the discrimination of desire, the discrimination of harmful thoughts, and the discrimination of harming. Because children are evil thoughts, so it is widely explained. The noble ones have three virtuous discriminations, which are the discriminations of definite emergence and so on, after showing this, these two verses were spoken. Among them, the first one was spoken, "Discrimination completely destroys," here it shows the increase of the attachment of desire together with its cause. Improper attention, and forgetfulness, and perversion will cause it to increase, these three causes are shown here in order. Discriminating in a different way is discrimination, the discrimination that is similar to improper attention

Pa'o. Thus, conquering is achieved through conceptualization and the senses. As it is said, "How does one become utterly conquered by conceptualization?" By not properly attending to desires that have been previously heard and previously experienced. One does not conceptualize with virtuous conceptualization, but clings to and abides in sin. The term 'embodied being' refers to that in which the body exists, meaning 'sentient being.' There is no craving for external objects like walls. Does mere perverse conceptualization increase craving? It is not so. However, 'unbearable craving' is mentioned, structuring the sentence as 'whoever has intense craving, that is.' Because the cause of latent desire is accumulated, and the antidote is not relied upon. The antidote is remembering the appearance of the body and so forth. How does one change due to unbearable craving? This is because in previous lives, the craving for desire was universally cultivated, practiced, and increased. Nevertheless, through proper attention, one gradually eliminates craving in the mind, which is the meaning of this phrase. 'By contemplating purity' refers to considering colors, shapes, touch, and intimate behaviors as repulsive and pure. To contemplate and focus in such a way is to contemplate purity. Therefore, it is said, 'How is it through contemplating purity? If someone who guards the senses does not associate closely, when he sees a woman, he becomes attached due to single-mindedness, because he improperly attends and grasps the sign of purity. Therefore, the body manifestly suffers, and the mind manifestly suffers.' For such a transformed embodied being, craving spreads outward and greatly increases, and the craving for desire increases even more. The increase of craving can be recognized by five signs: even for a small object of desire, one is completely entangled and increasingly attached due to unbearable craving for desire, let alone for an abundant object. What need is there to say? Acquiring many enjoyments through non-dharma is not dharma. Enjoyments are exceedingly abundant.
