Following, fully demonstrating, and practicing. Until then, one will not be satisfied. This refers to the two extremes of being free from craving until that time. Again, it is asked: By what means can satisfaction be attained? It is said: "From that" etc., meaning from desires. "Reversal" refers to abandonment. Therefore, whenever one abandons desires, at that time one is free from pursuit. As it is said: One should completely abandon, and in the correct view, one will become noble. For the desires of one's own body, it is not appropriate to use them as a ladder. Thus it is said. By correctly showing the weariness of body and mind, this indicates that one can attain samadhi. Because the method of eliminating craving is solitude. What should be done to eradicate afflictions and desires from the root? It is said: "Through wisdom" etc., meaning through uncontaminated wisdom, one fully understands desires as they are. As it is said: If one does not fully understand, I would not say that one can end suffering. "Which ones" refers to whom, that is, by designating through the previously shown order. It does not depend on the royal caste and Brahmin castes, etc. The Tathagata does not value lineage, caste, and tradition, but correctly measures good and bad actions. Therefore, purity depends on wisdom, not on caste. "Satisfaction" refers to being free from craving, that is, abandoning pursuit. "Those" refers to following the non-inverted method, which is indicated by the word "which ones." "Attain" refers to finding. This shows that abiding in asceticism with extreme difficulty and relying on desires are contradictory, because even for a long time one relies on desires. This is shown in this way: because it is easy to follow desires, that is also because one is combined with afflictions, that will not be satisfied, and it is vigorously pursued. By correctly grasping with the correct view, this shows that one will feel satisfied. Therefore, this is relying on desires and

Merely being satisfied with what has been done will not lead to contentment. Only through understanding reality without inversion, and through skillful wisdom, can one become content. Therefore, these teachings are given to focus on that. To those who think that no matter how much one enjoys desires, one will eventually be satisfied, it is said, "Desires do not satisfy." and so on. The word "happiness" means that which makes one happy, that is, a more excellent satisfaction than that which comes from enjoying desires. The word "contentment" here means: what brings contentment? The answer is, "Wisdom." That is, the contentment produced by the cause of understanding reality. Why? The answer is, "Because it does not change." That is, who will ever be satisfied by enjoying desires? No one will be satisfied, because it does not change. Those who wish to be liberated from desires should not rely on desires. Why? The answer is, "Because desires do not satisfy." Just like that, no matter when one enjoys desires, one will not be separated from attachment. Even in old age, one will not be liberated from arrogance and desire. As it is said: "Old age makes the body old, The head turns gray, The senses become dull, But greed and hatred do not age." Therefore, when one is old, one relies more on desires, to the point that the whole body becomes dry. Even though craving pervades the mind, one cannot enjoy it. Therefore, one should not rely on it, because it is not contentment. Does wisdom not bring contentment either? No, why? The answer is, "Through wisdom." That is, if a person is content through uncontaminated wisdom, then he is liberated from existence. He will no longer be dominated by desire and craving. Similarly, it is said, "One will not be dominated by existence." That is, not being dominated means not being dominated by craving that is in accordance with the self, completely relying on its own nature. One who wishes to be content should become accustomed to wisdom itself, and should not generate desire. One should generate such certainty.
