These were said so that he would not be discouraged. To show that benefit arises to the extent that defilements are abandoned, he said, "The shoemaker," and so on. The so-called "thorn of the village" is a euphemism for desire. Because for the monks, desire is very painful. Only when it is completely abandoned will peace of mind be attained. At that time, in the country of Kosala, there was a shoemaker of King Prasenajit and a chariot maker of the king who was not very tall, who often joined together to sew leather, so this was mainly illustrated by that example. Desires are painful, so happiness is attained by completely abandoning them, which is the summary of this passage. The meaning of "shoemaker" is one who makes shoes and is skilled in making shoes. The word "like" indicates an example of close measurement. "Leather" refers to cows and buffaloes, and so on. In "completely cut," "cut" means to cut off, to cut and process with a knife. "Completely" means from all aspects, meaning "completely cut." If you ask what is completely cut? The answer is, "shoes" are mentioned. It means binding the chariot wheel, the leather with which the chariot wheel is bound and connected is called a shoe, which is indicated by the root of the word nāhavandana (梵文天城体:नाहवन्दन,梵文罗马拟音:nāhavandana,汉语字面意思:not found). Alternatively, a shoemaker is a leather worker, because he covers the feet with leather, so it is called a shoe, meaning to protect the feet. Connect "what and what is abandoned" with "leather." This shows that just as a shoemaker completely cuts off all the necessary parts of the edge of the shoe and completely discards all the unnecessary leather, thereby achieving his desired purpose. Similarly, one who abandons desires, by abandoning any slightly arising phenomena, will become happy, meaning the cause of happiness. By completely abandoning it, one obtains it.

Because it is endowed with happiness in order to prevent suffering from arising and to ensure that happiness necessarily arises, it is because the cause is established as the result. For example, happiness is like taking medicine to cure illness is happiness. Thus, desire is also of two kinds: the nature of things and afflictions. Among them, the desire for things refers to the five objects of sense, such as form, and the complete grasping of family, such as parents, children, and so on. For those who have renounced the world, it is gain and respect. The nature of affliction is that desire itself is also the desire for those things, that is, the desire for whatever one wants. Completely abandoning the form of the combination of these two is to be endowed with happiness. As it is said: If one abandons complete grasping, those harms will not arise. Similarly, if one abandons the defilement of the mind, those harms will not arise. Thus, this is said in order to make those who are very happy with desire focus on abandoning desire. Abandoning a little desire, there is only a little happiness, but if one abandons it completely, that is complete happiness, and it is said in order to show this: If happiness, and so on. A Brahmin went before the Blessed One and asked: Venerable Gautama, what must be abandoned in order to attain all happiness? Therefore, in order to comply with him, this verse was spoken. Abandoning all desires shows the merits and benefits, and this is the summary meaning here. All refers to the complete happiness of the world and beyond. If refers to if. Happiness refers to following the enjoyment of desires, and so on. Desire refers to following the connection and manifesting desire. All desires refers to the greed for things and the greed for afflictions. Completely abandoning refers to completely abandoning. What and what desires are abandoned? It means that if one does not abandon the desire for the perception of happiness in one direction, one will not attain the complete happiness without defilement. Therefore, the Blessed One said: If you want complete happiness, all desires must be

It should be completely abandoned. This is what is said. Why? The answer is: The phrase "all desires" is mentioned, because whatever the state of completely abandoning all desires, that is the complete abandonment of all desires. So, how can all desires be completely abandoned? The answer is: By abandoning the two categories of afflictions that operate in the desire realm through the two paths of seeing and cultivation. "Supreme" means permanent. Or, having abandoned it through the path of no outflows, happiness becomes extraordinary, which is the meaning of "becoming extraordinary." "Obtaining happiness" means experiencing happiness, abiding in happiness, and obtaining happiness. So, how can one obtain supreme happiness by completely abandoning it? Because he has become a non-returner, no longer returning to the desire realm, and goes to the realm of nirvana without remainder. Therefore, since he has completely transcended the realm with harm, he obtains the happiness of manifest desire. Those who think that abandoning one aspect of desire is enough, these were spoken to guide them towards abandoning all desires. Why is it said that obtaining supreme happiness is achieved by abandoning desire? Because desire is suffering, due to being insatiable. Therefore, in order to show that abandoning these desires is happiness, it is said, "As long as one follows desire," and so on. The naked ascetic named "Desiring Happiness" sees it this way and says this: Like this, obtaining liberation through severe asceticism is itself satisfaction. The Brahmin named "Lord of Sacrifice" also sees it this way and says this: Like this, enjoying desires as one wishes is itself satisfaction.
