Form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. This does not refer to desire here, just as a lion's cave does not become a lion. So, what is this "desire" that is spoken of? It is said: What is spoken of is "conceptual craving," which is craving similar to discrimination, or arising from improper attention. Here, contemplating past or future objects with improper attention is conceptualization. Particularly clinging to what arises in the present is craving. Alternatively, generating for the sake of obtaining what has not been obtained is conceptualization. Clinging to what has been obtained is craving; craving that arises simultaneously with conceptualization is conceptual craving. Or, the craving of aspiration, because aspiration itself is craving, is the craving of aspiration. It is the craving of pursuing meaning. There are also cases where there is aspiration but no craving, such as wanting to go somewhere, etc. There are also cases where there is craving but no aspiration, such as being particularly attached to clothes, etc. Therefore, both should be grasped here. The term "person" refers to all afflictions, because he destroys karma and afflictions again and again. Furthermore, in order to show that the cause of desire is conceptualization itself, and not various objects, it is said: "Thus, various abodes also." What is said is that form and so on exist in various ways. The term "thus" refers to the form of the state of desire, that is, form and so on exist in various ways, and similarly, in the state of being free from craving, they also exist in the same way. The term "however" means "even so." The term "in this" refers to those who possess the aspect of form, those who possess the power of individual examination and meditation, those who possess the power of individual examination and meditation. The term "taming" means completely eliminating, it means completely destroying. Aspiration is craving, it is the thirst of pursuing meaning. If objects are desire, then it is impossible to completely cut them off in every way, therefore, the steadfast ones want to abandon desire, so (they must abandon) that aspiration itself.

Subduing is because, for those who abide in whatever place, the wise also want to abandon it, therefore, it is the desire itself that is subdued. Therefore, it is the attachment to desire that is the essence of desire, not the external objects. Otherwise, no one can be free from attachment, because the external objects exist as they are. Some people think that merely abandoning external objects will liberate them from desires, this thought is merely abandoning is enough, for those who hold this view, in order for them to grasp the abandonment of all discriminations of attachment, these words were spoken. On the other hand, in order to explain that external objects are also a manifestation of desire, it was said, "For people," and so on. Wandering everywhere, observing in this way, saying in this way: The form of desire, etc., does not exist. Why? Because for the forms themselves, some people find them pleasing, some people find them displeasing, so it is unreasonable for each person to contemplate things in their own way. When the Blessed One was dwelling in the Kalanda place in the Light Garden of Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar), he heard about this, went to the Blessed One and asked this question, and the Blessed One, granting his request, spoke these words. The summarized meaning here is that the first verse completely reveals the faults. The second verse speaks of beings being attached to tasting flavors. The remaining verses speak of definitely emerging because of seeing the faults, because of turning away from tasting flavors, so it is certain to emerge. Now, the meaning of the words will be explained. "Non-existent" means non-existent, which is desire. How is it non-existent? The word "constant" is spoken, meaning having an unchanging nature. Impermanence exists. This shows how one can fully understand that desire is not non-existent. For whom? The word "for people" is spoken, that is, for young people. For these people, because of having a changing nature, the destruction of desire is near at hand, so it is easy to gain trust, so only the word "person" is spoken, but all desires are also like that. If these are not constant, then like existing things, such as the two moons, etc., they are non-existent, if one thinks like this, then the phrase "it also exists" is spoken.
