It shows the faults of the offense, because burning is in accordance with the Dharma, so it shows the example of the torch. Sweetness is pleasing, joyful, and painful. Whatever is first, etc., that is it itself. Here, the sound of 'first' is the initial word, like giving alms after releasing water earlier, desires mean the meaning of initial joy. What is called 'hot fruit' is hot and unpleasant, the ripening of unwanted fruit is the hot fruit. As it is said: From desires arise killing and bondage in the world, sorrow, destruction, fatigue, and various sufferings. Desire itself also causes the king to fall, the Dharma declines, recklessly, and in the next life, one goes to hell. Therefore, this shows that in the visible Dharma nature, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and discomfort ultimately arise, and because of this reason, accumulating evil deeds, one will experience the ripening of the suffering of the lower realms. Therefore, it is said, 'ripening suffering' is mentioned, the fruit of ripening is unwanted because it is the fruit of the lower realms. Again, is this always the case in all situations? It is not so in all cases, however, 'joy' is mentioned to show the meaning, that is, because of craving, desire is manifested, for those who initially are sweet, the fruit is hot, and ripening becomes painful. For those without joy and without attachment, it is not so. Ripening is both suffering and joy, so the ripening of joy is suffering, it is the holder of karma. The following verses are done separately, and here it is summarized, why? It is answered, to establish the common and the particular. The common is like this, for both noble and non-noble beings, these are initially sweet and the fruit is hot. If those who lead to evil deeds become joyful, then ripening is suffering, initially it is joyful. What is called desire is beautiful form, etc. If there is joy, how does ripening become suffering? It is answered, it is the burner.

Having mentioned the word "is," it means that it later spreads and completely burns. What does it burn? It is said: Having mentioned the word "child," it means the various beings who follow desires, who are completely ignorant of what should and should not be done. How does it burn? It is said: Having mentioned the word "torch," it means holding it up like holding something burning. What does the torch burn? It is said: Having mentioned "not abandoned," it means burning the hand of the one who has not abandoned it. Similarly, those who delight in desires, they themselves will be scorched by desires, in the visible Dharma by the fire of affliction, and in the next life by the fire of suffering. In order to make those who see desires as beautiful but do not see the faults feel weary of desires, these were spoken. To show that the bonds of desire are difficult to untie, the two verses beginning with "jeweled earrings" were spoken. It is said that King Clear Victory bound a large crowd of people in various ways, some were bound by iron bonds, some were bound by wooden bonds, and some were bound by grass rope bonds. When the monks heard this while begging for alms in Shravasti, they reported it to the Blessed One, and at that time the Blessed One spoke these words. Furthermore, there was a person named "Victory in Battle" who developed great renunciation and became a monk, placing his two former sons nearby. Because he had become a monk without attachment, the son repeatedly tried to dissuade him because of attachment, until he attained Arhatship on the seventh time. In accordance with this, these were spoken. The noble ones consider which bonds are not strong, which they consider strong, and in whatever way they consider them to be strong, the noble ones quickly cut them off. This is the summarized meaning of these two verses. The so-called "those that are not strong" means that they are not firm and cannot be cut off. The so-called "those" refers to the bonds. Whatever is dominated by others is a bond, meaning a tool dominated by others. The noble ones refer to the Dharma, the Buddha, and his Shravaka disciples.
