Therefore, going to the other shore means going to the realm of Nirvana without residue, so it is going to the other shore. Abandoning afflictions and near afflictions has this benefit, that is, one can enter the realm of Nirvana without residue. Abiding in evil deeds and guarding the connections to the Noble Path. The explanation of the chapter on impermanence, the first part is completed. Next, the occasion for establishing the chapter on desire should be discussed. Because showing impermanence can generate true renunciation, this chapter is established in order to obtain things free from desire. Because in everything, first, non-attachment arises from desires. Then non-attachment arises from form and formlessness. Just like a mother's clothes, first removing the coarse dirt, and then removing the fine dirt, the occasion is discussed here in the same way. Mentioning "from conceptual thought" etc. The origin of this is that a woman is attached to another man, and is dissolute because of watching and talking. Thinking that in order to fetch water, she should fetch water from the well with a jug, she tied her own son's throat with a rope, put him in the well for a while, and then saw that her son was dead, from which true renunciation arose, and thus she spoke this verse. How is this established? The Blessed One went in that direction, and the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, recite this verse spoken by the perfectly complete Buddha. In short, it is for arousing attachment to desire, and for not arousing attachment. The separate explanation of the words. "Desire" means to pursue, meaning to strive for. This refers to the craving for the five desirable qualities. Therefore, calling out: Alas, desire! "Knowing" means to determine this matter. What is that matter? The answer is: You are the root. It is the cause of generating desire. Because of what?

Therefore, it is sexual and is the root of universal concepts. If there is no cognition of these objects, there will be no desire, and one can be free from desire through non-virtuous cognition. For empty places, too, one is lost due to the desire of wrong universal concepts. To show the root of desire, it is said: From universal concepts, it is said. Because of having improper attention, for things without self-nature, remembering their place and observing their form, the desire of lust will arise, alas, desire. Furthermore, desire is mentioned because it is absolutely undesirable, therefore it must be abandoned. Or, to prove that its object is unbearable. 'Arisen' means manifested, and the meaning of arising from the mind stream. To show that the way of not completely abandoning the dwelling of medicine and so on, it is said: You should not have universal concepts. It is said, for desires, do not think in a virtuous way, and you will be liberated. Therefore, it will not arise in you. It is said that because it is not universally conceptualized in a virtuous way, it will not arise in your continuum, because without a cause there is no result. Not arising means not completely arising, and it shows that it is impossible to arise completely. In order to make those who want to abandon the desire of lust without a basis, and to refute the saying that the maker of desire or the one who wants desire is dependent on carelessness, and to refute those who say there is a self, these were said. These desires with objects are the most to be abandoned, because they are the root of all harm. Why? Like this, sorrow arises from desires. It is said, because that woman, because she lost her child, beats her chest, is tormented by sorrow, utters wails, and is afraid of the family, if she hears about the child, she will cause harm to herself, considering this, these verses were said. For this, let us first explain the first way.

It is said [by the author]: The phrase "from desires" is stated to indicate the faults of not being satisfied with desires, and the benefits of making a determination. There are two types of desires: desires for external objects, such as beautiful things and suffering; and desires of afflictions, which are attachment to those objects themselves. Pursuing desires or longing for desires is because of relying on distraction. What arises from these two is suffering. Sorrow means the mental anguish of being separated from suffering. The phrase "causing one's own splendor to wither" is a definitive term. Fear is the mental activity of focusing on signs and giving rise to doubt that one will be harmed, which means truly being afraid. Both of these emotions arise sequentially from afflictions and desires for external objects. Because for things without external objects, there is no complete acceptance, or even if there is acceptance, for those who are free from attachment, there will be no sorrow arising from separation from external objects, and no fear arising from the fear of separation from them. For the moment, these indicate the faults of desires and non-desires. In order to show that there is no result without a cause, it is said: "If desires are completely abandoned." This phrase is to show the benefit of not being attached to desires. Whether through the power of individual analysis or through the power of meditation, if there is no attachment to desires, thereby completely eradicating and abandoning them, then for those who are liberated from desires, even if they are separated from suffering, there will be no sorrow, let alone the fear of being harmed. Sorrow shows the harm of being present now. Fear shows the harm that will occur in the future. In order to pursue the meaning of desires, and excessive attachment to desires, these words are spoken in order to abandon the craving for desires. Just as the desires of afflictions do not arise from the benefits of desires for external objects, this is also due to the nature of feeling. Through the condition of feeling, the word called craving arises. Therefore, this shows the root of the root.
