What is said is a close indication. What are they? It is said: What is called iron is what is made of iron, that is, the nature of iron, such as iron chains and so on. Wood is what is made of the nature of wood, made from the form of wood. Grass is what is made of grass, such as ropes and so on. This shows that the noble ones consider external bonds to be unstable, which is very clear. If so, what is strong? It is said: It is mentioned such as complete attachment. Whoever has a mind that is always attached to something is a completely attached mind, meaning that the mind is universally defiled by near afflictions. Furthermore, the mind that is completely attached by a non-afflicted mind is like this: Bodhisattvas are of the nature of compassion towards sentient beings, and not of the nature of craving, because they have been connected with compassion for a long time. This is from the praise. What does it enter into? It is said: It is mentioned the jewel earrings. Jewel earrings are jewel earrings, which are a distinction in kind, referring to those. What is called a jewel is an example of wealth that has not been made. The meaning of the made example is earrings, which means ear ornaments. This shows dependence on things that do not belong to sentient beings. What is called son and daughter shows dependence on things that belong to sentient beings. What is called son is born from oneself. What is called daughter also includes wife. The word "and" means that jewels and so on are not unique, but also apply to sons and so on, so the word "and" is mentioned. What is called dependence on what means having a thought of not completely abandoning craving. As it is said, having dependence means having craving. The noble one said that it is difficult to liberate. This refers to dependence on a completely attached mind. This is indeed a very strong bond, so the wise ones teach. Why? It is said: It is mentioned the bonds of desire and so on. The word "what" is to indicate the cause. Like this, depending on these.

Because the bonds of desire prevent and hinder abandonment, it is impossible to cut off desires and the like. Bondage is acting as one pleases, without the power to run, jump, or do anything similar. If one is armed with weapons and the like, it can be easily cut off, and thus one can be liberated. But the bonds of desire are not like that, so the noble ones say that it is difficult to liberate oneself from them. Some say that the bonds of desire cause attachment because they bewilder the mind. Even loose bonds do not cause fear in all actions. To refute the view that loose bonds are easy to untie, it is said, "Extremely difficult to untie," meaning that it is difficult to liberate oneself, so one must liberate and cut it off. Weapons, fire, water, mantras, medicines, and all those who are skilled in speech cannot completely liberate it. This is the true firm bond, because people desire to seek dependent bonds, and even if they speak of it, they cannot cut it off. When loose bonds allow one to act as one pleases, people do not realize that they are bound. Because it is extremely difficult to untie, even if one wants to untie it, one cannot, except through the teachings of the Buddha, firm discriminating observation, and the power of meditation. These three causes make the bonds of dependence truly firm, not iron and the like. This is the true bond. So, who can cut off this extremely difficult to untie bond? The answer is: Cut them off. Cutting off means severing. Quickly means without delay, in order to quickly reach the other shore, even with just one method, one can abandon all the habitual tendencies of the three realms. After cutting them off, what does one do? The answer is: Go forth. It means completely abandoning samsara and going to nirvana. Going to nirvana means becoming an Arhat. How is it done? The answer is: Without looking. It means towards the things that are relied upon and desired.

That is a view. Negating it is non-view, which is non-attachment. In relation to what? It is said: It is in relation to the pleasure of desire, meaning the enjoyment of desire. It is said that solitude of body and mind is realization, called "the steadfast," meaning possessing wisdom, without weariness through the power of individual examination and meditation. That is, through diligence and wisdom, by cutting off dependence on the practice of engaging in non-virtue, one realizes and completely enters the realm of nirvana without remainder, that is, one attains the realm of nirvana without remainder. Having been wearied by external bonds, this verse was spoken to generate weariness with attachment to the inner body. If these are correctly examined, then craving itself is desire, not the object. To show this, it is said, "Various worlds," and so on. In Kausambi, many lay practitioners gathered in a house for watching performances, and in the meantime, they discussed such topics as: What is desire? Some of them said: It is a pleasing wife. Others said: It is an obedient son. Still others said: It is the object of eye consciousness, namely form. When they went before the Blessed One, the Blessed One said: It is the desire of intention that is desire, what can external inanimate objects, such as beautiful forms, do? The Blessed One spoke extensively and uttered this verse. The condensed meaning here is what is not desire and how to show it. "Non-desire" is the negation that objects themselves are desire. What and it are always related? If asked what that is, it is said, "What is desire," that is, it is said, "What are the various worlds," what is "what"? The world is "travelers." "Various" is what makes the mind weary, in order to satisfy the mind, it is in accordance with the craving of various pleasing desires.
