Thus I have heard: Once, when the Buddha was in Shravasti, the wife of a caravan leader met with her own servant and became pregnant. However, because there were no visible signs, she herself was unaware, and everyone was certain that she was not pregnant. That caravan leader also collected goods as scheduled and went to other places. His wife gradually felt the fetus growing larger in her womb and thought: 'Alas, if it is born like this, it won't be long before my true identity is revealed. I will be condemned even though I have committed no crime, and all my relatives and friends will know.' Thinking this, she felt ashamed and told her trusted servant, pretending to be ill, and secretly stayed there. After some time, she gave birth to a very handsome boy. Although this boy was very lovely and pleasing to the eye, in order to avoid ridicule and slander, she entrusted him to a trusted young woman at night, as if plucking a heart from the heart, and had her throw him on the roadside, thinking: 'Why doesn't he just disappear as if eaten by dogs?' Due to the ripening of sins accumulated in countless lifetimes, the boy was abandoned on a royal avenue. He also became the priest who was previously given by the cruel Brahma, and due to the merit he had accumulated from endlessly killing beings in the past, he was protected by dogs, cows, elephants, and horses. The Blessed One thought: 'Now is the time to tame him.' So, at dawn, the Blessed One came surrounded by the assembly of monks, and prophesied: 'This person will become a great merchant in Shravasti, enjoy happiness for a long time, then will ordain in my teachings, and ultimately attain the state of an Arhat.' Then, he was sent to King Prasenajit, and the Blessed One commanded: 'Great King, please raise this boy named Dharmapala.' Therefore, he became known as the Great Merchant. A merchant of the king, in order to obtain this child, requested him from the king, and the king gave him to that merchant. That merchant then married an unruly wife.

There was a person who fought, saying, "Since there are three sons and four daughters, why raise this child as a son?" In order to kill the child, those who were not in harmony mixed poison with food and drink for him to enjoy, and also threw him into the fire to burn, threw him under the hooves of elephants and horses, threw him on the road where carts were pulled, threw him into the potter's heaps outside the city, and took him to empty villages, etc., trying in various ways, but they could not take his life, and instead their own three sons died young. He carried four food containers under his armpits, and came to give alms to the Pratyekabuddha in front of him, when three dogs came, barking very angrily, driving him to the place where potters fired pottery. This was because the karmic result of his past words, "Why isn't he dead yet?" had ripened. He lived in that village, and the child's hand was reliable, so he wrote a letter to the servants in the house. Hearing that "soon he will come from Rajagriha," the tired servant wrapped a small ring around his finger, and the child fell asleep. The fortune tellers heard the words, "Prosperity and decline are in this palm," and soon a Jewish merchant's daughter came, took the letter from his finger and looked at it. It read: "Greetings! A person from a great merchant family has come from outside the city, sending a letter to the servants in the house. As soon as you see this letter, secretly cut off my lineage, knock on the door and kill him, and throw him into the pit." Then, due to the complete arousal of the power of his merit, he erased that letter and wrote another letter: "Greetings! As soon as you see this letter, give that very lovely child, who is the continuation of fulfilling my heart's desires, to my daughter, because this is the continuation of good deeds, so give him to her! The time has also come, even if I am not there, you must take this seriously."

From then on, the king and ministers, and everyone else, openly and extensively did everything. The merchant also went out at the time of departure, and upon hearing of his death, vomited fresh blood and died. That great king also placed that boy in the position of the merchant, and after that, having experienced the happiness of home, he went forth and attained the supreme fruit of a renunciate. I am completely protected by the Dharma, because the Dharma of the teachings is the root of all Dharmas. Therefore, he especially generated the intention to take hold of the world through the Dharma, and therefore collected these verses spoken by all the Sugatas. This was also when the Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling, otherwise, what I say as the collection of Brahmins, is the collection of Brahmins spoken by the venerable Sarakshita, and in the Sutra of the Joyful Mother, it is also said that the special exposition is to go to the other shore. From the Minor Collection, it also seems to describe the order of what is happening now, monks, one should know the Dharma in this, that is, like the Sutra Pitaka and the Sung Verses, many scriptures will be lost. If one says that it contradicts the treatises of the Vibhajyavādins, it is because he has not understood the intention, after the Teacher passed away, from the scriptures, like the collection of special expositions made by the venerable Dharmatrata. The meaning of what the Vibhajyavādin said is that after the Teacher passed away, collecting from those scriptures, just as the son of the noble Katyayana collected from entering into wisdom, therefore, while the Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling, the venerable Dharmatrata also correctly collected the collection of special expositions. Showing the answer to the third question is a brief collection from the words of the Tathagata, because the Bhagavan, with compassion for all sentient beings, fully knows the thoughts and habits of those to be tamed, therefore, in accordance with that, for those people and those people, and according to the wishes of those people and those people, he spoke those verses, and also from there he collected and established this order of the collection.
