Because there is no turning back in the past. Sentient beings are like great rivers. Life is like a stream. Just as the flow of a great river flows forward at all times and cannot be reversed, so is life, this is to be explained. These were said in order to dispel the notion that life is permanent. The Dharmakaya is permanent because it is the most supreme, immutable, and desired result. To show that the Rupakaya is not like this, it was said, "The end of life," and so on. In Shravasti, there was an elder named Uttara, about eighty years old, who, after being ordained, was very afflicted and weakened by old age and disease, and was unable to rise from his seat or make efforts, and so on. These words were spoken especially in consideration of his situation. To abandon pride in youth, and the destruction and death caused by old age and disease, and the nature of impurity, this is the meaning summarized here. To be completely old means to be completely destroyed and ruined by old age. This body means the aggregates of grasping. The nest of disease means the place of disease. To perish quickly means that its nature is to perish, and this indicates that. It is the basis of the state of extreme destruction, because it is the nature of destruction due to the aggregation of causes and conditions. Just as because of the effects of karma, limbs and subtle limbs are cut by swords, etc., because there are cases of the body being cut, and so on. To be destroyed means to be separated, because the Rupakaya and the aggregates of name are separated, and this indicates death itself. If someone asks, is this (body) a collection of pure and fragrant substances for as long as it exists? To show that it is not so, it was said, "The collection of pus," etc., meaning that it is an accumulation of foul-smelling substances. If it is said that the collection of sounds is the body, then it will become another statement that is not a collection of pus, because it is a collection of foul-smelling substances, so this thing that is not the body will also be destroyed, this is the meaning. Why is this certain to be destroyed? Because it was said, "The end is death."

Therefore, all lives must eventually die. Stating the reason of the nature of things says: For example, the nature of fire is heat, and so on. Because there is life and the body exists, this life will perish. Therefore, if the dwelling is damaged, then the dweller will surely perish because the dwelling is damaged. These were spoken to make those who are proud of youth, etc., abandon their pride. When showing that it will perish, if asked how it will perish? The answer is: Alas, this body will not last long, etc. It is said that in Shravasti, when the Blessed One went to the charnel ground for a walk, he saw some rotting corpses in some places. The monks of high caste such as kings, etc., started to preach these from the fact that they would surely die within seven days. In short, this is to fully show the impermanence and emptiness of the body. The so-called "will not last long" means that it will not exist for a long time, because it can only exist for about seven days, So it shows that life is the nature of rapid death. The so-called "Alas" is to show compassion and joy for beings and their bodies. The so-called "this body" refers to the aggregates that are grasped. The so-called "on the ground" refers to places such as charnel grounds. The so-called "will fall" means to collapse, meaning to fall on the ground and stay. The so-called "empty" means to be separated from the three existences, meaning selfless. Then, does the self of consciousness also not exist? The answer is: It is said "separated from consciousness", separation is the separation of each, meaning separated from this consciousness, separated from the mind. As it is said: When life, warmth and consciousness abandon this body, it will fall on the ground like a mindless piece of wood. Therefore, it should be understood that because it is selfless and separated from consciousness, it will die. Here is an example called "abandoned charnel ground", just like firewood abandoned in the charnel ground. The so-called "useless wood" refers to a person who wants to accumulate firewood entering the forest to find straight wood.
