After a very long-lived old man died, obviously suffering from illness and old age, I went to beg for food, and I knew about this. The Blessed One heard such words from those monks. The Blessed One said this: Whenever one is going to die, one will die at the appropriate and inappropriate times. Just as most people die from illness and old age, what is shown here is the condensed meaning. The so-called "anyone" refers to anyone, and everyone will eventually die. The word "also" indicates that one will also die at an inappropriate time. The so-called "one hundred years" means one hundred years, meaning one hundred seasons. Whoever lives to this time will be led away by the Lord of Death, and will surely die, which is the meaning of the word "also." There is no certainty, and whoever lives to one hundred years is not related to one thousand years. This means that even in that period of time, sentient beings are certain to be separated from death. If asked, how are they led away by death? It is said: The so-called "these" refers to the beings that follow or pursue. If asked, what is it? It is said: It is old age, which destroys and harms. Whoever reaches the full age of one hundred years is destroyed by old age, the body becomes old, and there is no great dwelling, like a ripe fruit. To show that those who are destroyed by illness before reaching one hundred years are these, it is said, "or sick." Or, some may also be destroyed by intense desire. The so-called "or" refers to the consideration of two situations. Even without old age, some are destroyed by illness and die, like the son of the venerable Pilinda, etc., like an unripe fruit being struck by a stick. Neither of these two situations exists, and being impermanent, one will be destroyed by death due to the karma of previous lives. To show those who will hold short-lived karma, it is said, "destroyed by death," or rather, the Lord of Death himself will destroy these, meaning that there is death even in the womb and so on. Illness and old age can be treated by taking nutrients and so on, but death cannot, which is what is to be shown. Life and without illness and

These were spoken in order to make those who are arrogant with our arrogance abandon their arrogance. To show that conditioned things do not depend on the cause of destruction, but are destroyed in an instant, and are destroyed by their own nature, it was said, "Always going," and so on. In the city called Ayodhya, near the Ganges River, there lived a very old and frail fisherman who mercilessly put live fish into boiling water on the desert, watching them struggle and taking pleasure and laughing at it. Therefore, at his request, these verses were spoken. These sentient beings, without ceasing or returning, go to the presence of death in a continuous stream of instants, which is the condensed meaning. "Always" means going to the presence of the Lord of Death at all times, because one obtains different stages of childhood, youth, adolescence, middle age, and old age, so it is always going and does not stay in any stage. If someone asks, when will it return? The answer is, it is said, "Without returning," which shows the fruit that must be received, because having gone to the later stage, one does not remain in the former stage. If someone asks, will night and day not return? The answer is, it is said, "In day and night," day means daytime, and night is the same. Half-month, month, and year, etc., because these are different names, so only these are mentioned. Completely destroyed means that in each instant, the differences of form, health, strength, etc., are completely exhausted. These show the stages of age, and in each day and night, impermanence is shown in an instant. The remainder, in order to show the suffering caused by suffering, it is said, "Hot spring," which is the collection of karma, which is both water and hot, so it is a hot spring, meaning boiling in that water. Or, where there is a flat land with hot water, it is in the boiling water. Like a fish means like a fish. Torment means boiling.

Just as fish are put in hot water and boiled, so too are these sentient beings extremely tormented. If asked how these sentient beings are tormented? It is said: Mentioning birth and death, suffering is due to not wanting formations, etc. Directly stating the nature of suffering, it is birth and death, because it is samsara. Samsara symbolizes birth and destruction, and secondly, like a wheel, it torments beings, because it possesses the three sufferings, showing that desirable things such as lineage, wealth, youth, etc., will change. In order to abandon excessive attachment to samsara, these verses were spoken. Because life is extinguished at all times and in all actions, it is said: this life, day and night, etc. In the place of the snowy mountains, five hundred sages were practicing austerities in order to avoid aging and death. To subdue them, the Bhagavan went there, showing that discriminating thoughts about desires, etc., lead to falling into the lower realms, thereby generating renunciation. Seeing the Ganges River flowing down from the slopes of the snowy mountains, those who were complacent and not seeking quick death, the Bhagavan spoke these words in accordance with them. Constantly and unceasingly exhausting life, this is the condensed meaning. Life is life. Day and night are the sun and darkness. This shows that life is exhausted at all times. If it is said that walking, it is also like a shadow. If it is said that abiding, it is like breathing. Abiding also includes all states of the body, that is, including the states of moving and not moving, encompassing all actions of the body. Here an example is given, mentioning the great river, etc., the continuous flow of the river is the water flow. The great river is the Ganges, etc. Like... is a metaphor. Will flow away, showing that it flows without end, life is like the water of the great river. Will not return, meaning life.
