Unconquerable and invincible. The term "death" refers to the lord of death. The fear of death exists everywhere. Therefore, to show that one should cultivate the path with the fear of death, these words were spoken. If one thinks that it is only in the present moment that one is tormented by the fear of death, and not at other times, to show this, it was said, "has arisen," and so on. In Shravasti (Mnyan yod, ancient Indian place name), after the great Gautami, the mother of beings, passed away, the Blessed One went there with the Sangha of Shravaka disciples, and taught the Dharma with statements such as, "All conditioned phenomena are of such a nature." When Charka said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, why do you not grieve? What is the reason for that? Because this is the Blessed One's aunt, who nursed and raised you." Having heard this, the Blessed One said these words: One should know what is to be feared, which is the fear of abandoning this body; one should know who is the knower, which is the wise one who knows as it is; one should know what to rely on, which is the Dharma taught by the Buddha; one should know what is to be done, which is the practiced Brahmacharya. This shows these four points, which is the summarized meaning. The term "has arisen" refers to the state of any sentient being's dwelling, which, with the accomplishment of its dwelling, is the name of an action related to sentient beings, as explained by the words "having abandoned this body." "Will arise" means will be born, that is, in the future, the Buddha will be the same. The conjunction "and" is for the purpose of summarizing. The meaning of "has arisen and will arise." The meaning of "gone" is to be liberated from sorrow even in the next world, truly by karma, as previously stated, falling into hell by sinful actions, and so on. Whatever has arisen is also gone, to understand that what has arisen is what has passed away, therefore it does not show the situation where other beings to be tamed at that time have passed away and returned. If asked, "Having abandoned what does one go or pass away?" The answer is: "Having abandoned this body" was said, that is, having abandoned the body that was grasped. All of that will perish.
