Having gone to that place, (he said:) "Monk, if I were to obtain the body of an elephant for the sake of the consort Arya Kai, even if the body of the elephant were completely abandoned by me, for the sake of the consort Arya Kai, until I become king, until the Blessed One has spoken well." Therefore, the Blessed One spoke these words: "All sentient beings, all living beings, all existences, will ultimately die, and death will ultimately cease. There is no one born who does not die." This was widely proclaimed with this verse. All living beings are certain to die. Moreover, the cause is that through the karma of afflictions, a corresponding (result) will arise, but not for an Arhat. This is the summarized meaning. All sentient beings are all living beings without exception. "Will die" means will completely abandon life. Why? Because in this way, life will ultimately die, because it is compounded, so life, like a vase, is known to be perishable, and this is their nature, like the solidity of the earth element. If the continuation of life is cut off, will there be rebirth? It is said: "As is the karma," because it corresponds to karma, because the result of karma is clear, so afflictions can also be understood, just as fire is seen from smoke. Therefore, how karma is should also be known here. Thus it is taught that those who have not abandoned karma and afflictions will follow and be subject to it, which is the remainder. There is no separation from desire. What kind of karma has been done, whether the state produced by good or bad deeds, going to that place is reasonable. "Following" means going. What is that? How karma goes, for what? Good and bad results approach each other. This was said, the two good and bad deeds, the two good and bad actions, for their results, pleasing and displeasing will arise. How the results of good and bad deeds approach, follow, the results of good and bad deeds approach.

Therefore, relying on (karma) will lead to experiencing the results of what is agreeable and disagreeable, and without abandoning (karma), it will arise again (as results). Just like that, he will definitely experience the agreeable and disagreeable results, just like karma and afflictions. Therefore, he will go to other worlds. Knowing that this life, which has karma as its cause and experiences the desired and undesired results, is impermanent, the wise should strive to practice virtue and cultivate meditation. These words were spoken to teach this principle. If it is taught like this, "according to their karma," then with what kind of karma will beings follow to where? The answer is: with sinful karma, they go to hell, etc. It also mentions the absence of happiness, referring to the hells of cold, etc. Because there, there is no happiness arising from fruition, it is entirely suffering, so the sutra says that is hell. Those sinful actions are sinful actions. With the actions of misconduct, one will definitely go to hell. Hell refers to the three lower realms, either omitted by the word "etc.," or mainly referring to (the hell realm). "Performing meritorious deeds" means accumulating virtuous actions such as generosity. The word "also" has a special meaning, or it also means "again." "Happy realms" are noble or highly praised destinations, so they are happy realms, which refers to the realms between gods and humans. If someone asks, will all those who perform meritorious deeds go to happy realms? Because it is not so, it is said: others, through cultivating the path. It means to cultivate diligently and manifest repeatedly. "Others" refers to those who have done more virtuous deeds. "The path" refers to the Noble Eightfold Path. Attaining Nirvana means going and definitely arriving, entering the city of Nirvana. What is it like? To explain that it is going (to Nirvana) without any aggregates remaining, it is said: without outflows. It means that the habitual tendencies to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of cultivation have been abandoned. If there are still habitual tendencies remaining, then Nirvana cannot be attained.

Here, it refers to sentient beings acting primarily out of self-grasping. That is, through cultivating the path of fear of death, liberation is fully revealed. For those who have no remaining aggregates, death itself is not to be feared, but it is not so for others. To illustrate this, it is said, 'Where dwelling, etc.,' meaning that for those who have not exhausted the aggregates or have not completely liberated themselves from suffering, just as relying on a wall does not escape the enemy, they cannot escape from death in any way. This is what is being expressed. It says, 'Where dwelling, etc.' For example, due to the influence of the foolish minister named Kamatrika, King Holy-born wanted to harm the Shakya territory. At that time, to demonstrate the power of karma, the Blessed One placed two young Shakya boys in the center of the moon. Two were placed in the ocean. Two were placed in the crevices of Mount Sumeru. Two were placed in his own begging bowl, and as a result, the Shakyas were killed, and those Shakya boys also died. For the sake of the nearby attendants, this verse was spoken. Upon hearing it, eighty thousand sentient beings realized the Dharma. In summary, there are three places: the sky, water, and land. Land also has two types: mountains and the ground. Here, no matter where they dwell, they cannot escape from death, which is the summarized meaning. The meaning of the limbs is 'non-existence,' which is a complete negation. The so-called 'cannot overcome' is because it is completely harmful. If asked where they dwell, the answer is, 'In the space,' meaning in the center of space, which is where the stars and planets are, which is what is called the sky. In the sea, it is in the depths of the water reservoir. Mountains refer to the crevices connected to Mount Sumeru, etc., such as caves. Entering means going there to reside. 'Not being existent' means non-existence. The so-called 'that' refers to the place mentioned below, which is the part of the earth. The so-called 'where dwelling' refers to dwelling in that place, and the so-called 'sentient beings' is the remainder of the sentence. The so-called 'cannot overcome' means overwhelming.
