It is so. Aging is what makes the body slack, damages the limbs, and changes. Aging leads to weakness, meaning becoming incapable. As it is said, "The body weakens, and strength also weakens." The word "and" means not only disease but also aging. The word "by" means it must be grasped, mainly these send people to the lord of death. The lord of death is the karma of death. Sending is making go. Where does it make go? It is said: It is people, that is, sentient beings. Among them, the stick is like disease because it is harmful. The herdsman is like aging because he carries the stick of disease, because most diseases arise from aging. The place where livestock dwell is like the lord of death, because he makes one go to the place of death. Just as a herdsman drives cattle with a stick and makes them reach the pasture where cattle dwell, so disease afflicts people, and aging weakens and kills them, and where death exists, it brings one close to the fruits of one's karma. To prevent carelessness, this verse was spoken. If it is said, how is it certain that disease and aging send people to the lord of death? It is said: The place of life, that is, time and life, are inherently unstable and impermanent, and anything weakens them. If asked, how are these two inherently unstable? It is said: Like the water of a spring. And so on. The Blessed One, in Rajgir, addressed the monks, saying: Monks, know that the life of people is very short. When he spoke extensively, the evil demon Mara transformed into the form of a Brahmin boy and said this to the Blessed One: Day and night do not pass, and life does not perish, and the life of people is not exhausted, like the rim of a chariot wheel. The Blessed One replied: Like the water of a spring, day and night pass.

It has been said what should be known. Others say that the Blessed One, seeing that the water in the pool was tormented by the extreme heat of summer, and that the water was completely dried up and became very little, spoke these words. The past is utterly dissipated and destroyed, because life, which depends on time, is impermanent due to the passage of time, which is the nature of day and night, so existence and life are also destroyed, meaning to go to the Lord of Death. Others want that kind of meaning. It is only the past, not that time has passed, thus it shows. What is past? It is day and night, the state of appearance in the continents is day. The state of darkness is night. Because only those times are life and vitality. However, the word 'also' means that not only do day and night pass, but because it is destruction, life will also be destroyed and exhausted. Not mentioning the five aggregates themselves is the main point, mentioning life is because the inner aggregates depend on life, here the example of a house relying on a single pillar should be cited. Thus, just as day and night pass, so too will life be destroyed and cease to exist, therefore it is said, people and so on. Life here is considered as the requisites of life, the word 'requisites' is added later. There are also two kinds of requisites of life, the inner body and the outer food and drink and so on, both of which are able to be exhausted. Because time is able to exhaust extremely, so all conditioned things will change in that way, so life or the requisites of life, lifespan, that is, the root of life. What should be accomplished extremely is the existence belonging to desire, because it is related to day and night. The life of the upper realms is not related to this. Thus, when life is exhausted, it will not return again, in the manner of the previous verse, it is exhaustion and rapid destruction. If all sentient beings will die, why only speak of people? This is shown and entered from the perspective of people, so there is no contradiction. Or, it is merely the nature of having death.

It is the sound of a person, but not the person himself. Here is an example and it is said: The so-called "water trickle" is a small stream of water. This water trickle is like this, the sunlight in summer is very hot, it is dried up by the sun, and only a little water remains. Similarly, one's own life with shallow blessings is also tormented by diseases and the like in the situation of samsara, and disappears quickly. In order to dispel excessive attachment to life, these were said. Like this, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma for the benefit of others, teaching by understanding the thoughts of others, etc., not in order to obtain from others what one needs to understand. As it is said: The Buddhas do not wash away sins with water, nor do they remove the suffering of beings with their hands, nor do they transfer their own realization to others, but only speak of the Dharma nature to liberate them. Therefore, from this life to the next, if this life ends, then all the suffering aggregates will be extinguished. Therefore, in order to show that the end of life should not be denigrated, it is said "For the lazy" and so on. When the monks gathered in the rooms of the residence and sat down, they would occasionally say such words: "Venerable ones, what is the longest?" Some said, "For the lazy, the night is the longest." Others said, "For those who are tired from the road, a yojana is the longest." The Blessed One heard this and spoke this verse. Others say that a god came and said to the Blessed One: "What is the longest for the lazy? What is the longest for those who are tired from the road? What is the longest for a child? Please answer these questions for me." To this, the Blessed One replied: "For the lazy, the night is the longest." and so on. Others say that this verse was spoken in response to King光明王's insomnia and the fatigue of travelers. The cycle of life is painful, therefore, in order to fully understand the Dharma, one must strive diligently, which is the summary meaning here. Long.
