It means "scope." A potter is someone who makes pottery. Making means manufacturing. If asked, what is manufactured? The answer is: It is called a "container for holding," because it is something that holds, so it is a container. It is the meaning of a container and vessel made from a container of the nature of holding. If asked, what will it become? The answer is: It will eventually be destroyed, meaning it will eventually be destroyed by parts. This thing that will eventually be destroyed has many grains. Everything means without remainder, not even a little bit remaining, up to "without remainder," which explains that everything that is made is impermanent. Therefore, this is to symbolize that external things are also impermanent in a metaphorical way. People means sentient beings, and life means lifespan. "Likewise" means that it will eventually be destroyed, because everything is of the nature of death. Just as the vessels made of earth by the potter are carefully made, because they have no essence, they easily obtain the conditions for destruction, so everything will eventually be destroyed. Similarly, a life that is carefully blended with virtuous deeds, or that possesses various kinds of karma, because everything has no essence, will eventually be destroyed. This is the summarized meaning. Here, each one has a definite origin. Near Jeta Grove, the Blessed One saw many vessels made of earth by a potter, and then spoke this verse. Monks, just like these vessels, because they are without conditions, everything will eventually be destroyed in the same way. Similarly, this life is also like that, he said, and spoke this verse. Because it shows that the life of everything is ultimately death, it is said in order to abandon attachment to it. The basis of everything is earth. Just as on a loom, whatever weft is inserted, once the weft is inserted, the remaining portion that the loom can weave becomes very little. Similarly, due to past actions, life, which holds a very short time, passes away with each and every moment. Therefore, life becomes very short, and life is exhausted. The phrase "until the very end" is a summary of the meaning. The word "example" should be understood in conjunction with the word "afterward." A loom is a collection of threads that are stretched and lengthened. Stretching means to lengthen and extend. The weft refers to "any one," and in order to grasp the thread connected to it, it is repeated as "any one," meaning the thread that passes through the warp with any thread. Because it is used to make the weft, it is called the weft. Inserting without interruption means inserting, just like sowing seeds in a field, which means inserting. Once the loom is stretched and weaving begins, then the interval is blocked, there is no opportunity, it is exhausted, and the remaining portion becomes very little, because the weft prevents the subsequent action. Similarly, moments are eroded by day and night, meaning that little life remains. In order to seek the pride of life, this verse was spoken. It is also said: One who is arrogant with the pride of living, will never serve a guru, because a mind aroused by poison, how can it proceed correctly? Anyone who correctly and truly understands, recognizes that this is a collection of faults, and strives to do good, that is a wise person with the thought of liberation. After showing the mindless, he spoke of the mindful, such as saying "for example, certainly," and so on. King Ajatashatru handed over a thief to the executioner, who threatened him, wearing a garland of karavira flowers on his head. The Blessed One saw this, released him, and spoke this verse. For example, just as someone destined to be killed is taken to be executed, similarly, sentient beings are also born to die. Just as he takes each step, so too do these beings pass through time, such as day and night, in each and every moment.
