It will fall and perish. The scriptures say that apart from the unpleasant sound of the north, there will be extreme death. Death is due to misdeeds. Like this, the lives of beings are unstable and all perish, so the noble ones will not abandon it, and will strive to exhaust conditioned phenomena. In order to combine this with that meaning, this verse was spoken. In order to explain the examples and classifications of these, it was said, for example, ripe fruit, etc. The Blessed One, surrounded by a gathering of monks, while walking in the forest, saw the fruits falling from the trees and said to the monks: Monks, life is not to be trusted. In this verse, the word "for example" indicates a metaphor. "Always" means "continuously." Why is that? Because the danger of ripe fruit is spoken of. Falling means falling, that is, separating from the continuation of connection. Danger is connected with the mind, so how can fruits have danger? Like danger, It is not wrong to name danger as danger, just as beings have the danger of being separated from life, so too with fruits, when they are close to falling, worldly people express it with the sound of danger, for example, the field will become dangerous, and the field will disappear. Worldly people follow the scriptures, and the Buddha also said that he does not abandon worldly dharmas because he follows worldly people. Here, the naked ones think that fruits etc. have minds, but this is also not the case, because there is no sign of life. As it is said: The precursor of action is the appearance of consciousness, I and others grasp it, consciousness is truly existent, in this way consciousness is not there. Similarly, external things, such as trees, etc., are not eternal. Because there is no mind, it does not move, and it can grow again after being cut, etc., these should be explained here. "Similarly" means "like this." "Has been born" means "appeared."

That is how it becomes. As it is said: For beings, happiness and so on exist, various kinds of harm enter and occur, and trees that have not grown will not be moved or shaken by extremely violent and unbearable winds. 'Human' means having the nature of death, which is the meaning of sentient being. 'Always' means being afraid at all times. Why? Because it is death, meaning the cessation of things of the same kind. 'Fear' is the loss of mental stability because it creates doubt about death. This is how it is shown: Just as fruits are of a nature to fall, because of that reason, they are fully ripened and influenced by external factors, and because of impermanence and falling, they are afraid. Similarly, these people also have the nature of death, therefore, at this time, life decreases, karma is exhausted, and external conditions become close, and they are afraid of death. In order to make those who are negligent of virtue due to the pride of life abandon negligence, this verse was spoken. It is not only what grows from seeds, but also because what grows from ashes and relatives will also be destroyed, so it was said: for example, the five verses of the potter and so on. The Blessed One was staying in the forest of Anjana in the city with residences. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One, together with many monks, went to the city with residences to beg for alms. At that time, in the city with residences, a Brahmin named Bharadvaja, old and frail, who had lived for one hundred and twenty years, passed away. Secondly, a young son of a noble family, only seven years old, also died. The two of them were carried on a stretcher, walking in front of a large crowd, with women disheveled and crying, following behind, and the Blessed One saw them. After that, Ananda folded his upper robe into four layers and laid out a seat, teaching the Dharma to the Shravakas: Monks, in this way, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent and unstable, and he began to speak extensively about death.

and show that life will eventually perish. Monks, it should be told from any royal great sala tree, such as the Arhat, the Pratyekabuddha, and the Buddha Bhagavan. Monks, in the past, when the lifespan of beings was eighty thousand years, there appeared a wheel-turning king named Evil Sound. In his garden, at the root of a banyan tree king named Well-Dwelling, he would have about five hundred Brahmin boys named Spoke-Wheel recite the secret mantras of the Brahmins. He went alone to a secluded place, hid himself, and thought and contemplated in this way: People's lives are short. Even now, people are less enthusiastic about practicing meaning, practicing Dharma, practicing merit, practicing happiness, and cultivating virtue. Should I shave my hair and beard and renounce with the Brahmin boys? Spoke-Wheel thus revealed it. Knowledge was communicated. He abandoned the five obscurations and generated the four immeasurables. Having become detached from desire for desires, he taught the Dharma to the Brahmin boys: Brahmin boys, the life of people is very short. For example, potters make various kinds of vessels from clay, but they will eventually perish. Just as the vessels made of clay are, so is the life of people. Just as when one thread after another is inserted into a stretched loom, the threads follow one another. Just as people who are to be executed are taken to the execution ground, they approach the execution ground. Just as a waterfall flowing from a high mountain flows rapidly and goes far and does not turn back. Just as a line drawn on water quickly disappears and does not last long. And so on. He showed generally with those immediate verses, and then spoke of each one as the occasion demanded. Example means showing a close example. The word 'na' is to be taken as certain, for in reason it should be so combined with all these.
