We. (Because) only he can focus on and measure liberation, while others fall into samsara. "Not delighting in honors" means not seeking gain. Not contemplating many wrong views shows the solitude of the mind. The term "monk" shows the solitude of the body. "Solitude gradually increases" means what solitude is solitude by? That is, being separated from the afflictions is the meaning of the noble path. Gradually increasing it is done by meditation and so on. Therefore, relying on the wisdom based on the two solitudes, the faults of gain and honor must be abandoned, and one must cultivate oneself as a vessel by cultivating the path. If one is not separated from gain and honor, it is an obstacle to samadhi, hence it is taught. "Not striving for everything" is the beginning of these two verses. A monk went before the Blessed One and asked: "Venerable, to what extent should a monk strive and exert himself to attain samadhi?" This monk should not be distracted by one thing, nor known by all, that is, from where can we be hidden? Thus and so on, therefore this principle is taught. "Not striving" means not striving, that is, not becoming attached to all activities. This is included in guarding the precepts, because samadhi depends on this. "Not being obscured by people" means that because he is a person who is not obscured by people, that is, he should not show off his own merits to all people. It is said in the sutra: "Your sins should be proclaimed, and your virtues should abide without boasting." This shows the means of purifying the precepts. I have heard and seen that in most cases, the distinction of precepts and other virtues is lost due to boasting. A monk who is endowed with precepts and has virtuous qualities would not lie for the sake of hundreds of thousands of Karshapanas, but at another time, being overcome by gain and honor, he would for the sake of one Karshapana

It is also said that lying is seen, etc. "Living without relying on others" means not relying on the king or others, and not accepting offerings. It is said in the sutra: "You should abide in your own island, abide in your own refuge, others are not islands." "One should not use the Dharma like a merchant" means that one should not approach one's own precepts and other Dharmas in the manner of a merchant, striving for profit, and acting like a merchant. One should not use the Dharma, saying, "I am learned, I hold the sutras, I possess precepts," and saying, "Therefore, I will gain great benefits," one should not trade in this way. "One should accept one's own gains" means that one should not despise the small amount of alms obtained in a reasonable way, or one's own gains such as monastic robes, and one should not think, "What is the use of this?" "One should not generate desire for the gains of others" means that one should not be attached to the great wealth obtained by other virtuous people, thinking, "When will I obtain such wealth?" Why? Because "of others" means that if some monks are attached to the gains of others and do not accept their own gains, these two situations will distract them and they will not be able to attain samadhi, that is, they will not be able to attain single-pointedness of mind. By abandoning these obstacles and being without doubt, one will be able to attain excellent samadhi. In order to clearly show that turning away from gain and respect is a good way of life, the three verses beginning with "If you want to live happily" are spoken. The sutra says "Four Noble Lineages" etc., therefore these contents are also quoted here. Others, because they are not satisfied with the requisites of the Sangha, strive for more. For example, a certain householder at the same time took a very beautiful wife and guarded her very carefully. Similarly, a certain novice (referring to a male or female novice) also entered the householder's house without being seen by the gatekeeper.

Then, the landowner came, and upon seeing him, became enraged. He broke his alms bowl, tore his robes, and, in a very humiliating manner, drove him out of his house. It is said that he, controlling this matter, spoke these words. 'If one wishes to live in comfort,' this means if someone wishes to live and act without harm or injury. This indicates this point and mentions the other's statement: 'If one wishes to see this ascetic,' referring to the monk himself or the path of the noble ones. Because it is the characteristic of seeing, it is seeing, and the one who possesses it is joyful and desirous. Living comfortably in this way means cultivating the path when the discipline is not broken. To show what action is desired in this way, 'the Sangha should take the robes,' which means one should not refuse to take the common robes of the Sangha because one desires good things. 'If food and drink are given, then take,' which means food and drink are the basis for achieving freedom from afflictions without difficulty. This shows the two noble lineages who understand the Dharma through robes and meager alms. He spoke of the noble lineage content with little dwelling. 'If one wishes to live in comfort,' and so on, one should also dwell without particular attachment to the Sangha's dwelling, etc., like a snake in a mouse hole. For example, just as a large snake, a mongoose, etc., enters a very narrow mouse hole out of fear, in order to guard very cautiously, entering because it dislikes it and wants to leave, similarly, the noble Shravakas should also dwell in monasteries and other dwellings. Monks, relying completely on dwellings is not because of attachment, but in order to destroy as much as possible the defilements of ordinary people like this, one should properly place them internally and do one's best, so it is said in the Sutra. 'Rely,' means to dwell. 'Dwellings,' means monasteries, etc., because they are places of complete practice. He spoke of the noble lineage that delights in renunciation and meditation. 'If one wishes to live in comfort.'
