Extensive explanation of the benefits of teaching the path that transcends objects of reference. For example, "By what is peace," and so on. As for "Those who desire happiness obtain happiness," if one desires happiness, one will obtain the happiness of good rebirths and the happiness of the cessation of craving. By what means? It is said, "By acting in this way," that is, by acting in the distinction of meditating on the path in the manner previously shown. "Obtaining a good reputation" means obtaining manifest and excellent praise. "Fame will increase" means that the praise of that fame in secret is truly spoken, and thus it increases. When is this the case? It is said: Combine it with "Whoever cultivates the straight path." What is such an "arya" like? It is without outflows. "The eightfold path" means that this has right view and so on. "Straight" is not crooked, because it is the meaning of ultimate truth. Those who desire happiness cultivate peace, which means obtaining the pacification of the harm of samsara. "Cultivating the path" means becoming accustomed to the means of liberation. Why is this so? Because "by this one finds nectar," which means accomplishing the state of immortality. Those who desire happiness cultivate, and for as long as they certainly obtain that nectar, because it is not deceptive. The explanation of the twelfth chapter, the collection of paths, is complete. Now, the chapter on respect is to be spoken, because when cultivating the path, obstacles certainly arise, and therefore they must be avoided. Those who are particularly fond of gain and respect are diminished from what they have obtained, especially from the attainment of purity. As it says, "The mule with its own womb," and so on. In Rajagriha, Devadatta would obtain gain and respect in this way: the son of a nun with an excellent body, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, would offer him service and honor both inside and at night with about five hundred chariots, and when he came out, he would gradually separate the essence of the vessels with about five hundred chariots. Devadatta would also sit near the first row of food together with about five hundred monks. Then, many monks in the early morning said, until the monk...
