has been abandoned. Here, it is said to show that the noble path itself is the antidote: practicing celibacy, etc., practicing for the sake of the fruit of Brahma is more diligent than the fruit of Nirvana, which is the meaning of the noble path. By the words "one is delighted by practicing celibacy," whoever has it is endowed with celibacy. Someone said, can one be called an "elder" merely by abandoning all subtle increases and attaining Nirvana? Again, it is said, "When abandoning groups, etc." Association with a group is a branch of the group itself, and the group is related to the aggregates. Abandoning it is abandoning the group, because it is no longer related to the aggregates of existence. There is no birth there, because all connections have been abandoned. Abiding in the path of no more learning, in order to express the state of benefiting others, it is said "elder," that is what is called an elder, that is the ultimate elder, because it benefits the continuums of oneself and others, this is what the holy ones have said. In order to show that possessing qualities such as discipline is a renunciate, and not just the appearance, it is said "without asceticism," etc. Then, the wealthy man Dayagava, who lived in the land of Dalalena, and a Brahmin named Rohitaka, said this to the Blessed One: Gautama, I ask you, venerable one, can a monk become a renunciate and a Brahmin merely by taking on the appearance? Therefore, venerable one, in the five regions of the south, there are very many monks and very many Brahmins who wear robes, but they are immoral and engage in sinful deeds, very many. For this reason, these three verses were spoken: Merely shaving the head is not a renunciate. That is, merely shaving the hair and beard does not make one a renunciate, even in a conventional sense, like a fire painted on a wall. Why? It is said, "without asceticism," meaning, without asceticism, for this person, one must first accept the Pratimoksha vows, etc.

Because the land did not produce it. The word "cing" means "for what reason." A monk is referred to here as someone who possesses discipline. What are the reasons why one might not properly uphold discipline? It's not just this one; other disciplines also signify a practitioner, such as speaking truthfully, etc. "Ordination is the intention towards truth," meaning that if one lies, that is, speaks falsely and untruthfully, even if one has properly taken the Pratimoksha vows, one has not correctly restrained oneself with speech. If these are mixed in, then one is not a practitioner even in the conventional sense. Since one has already been ordained, why would one lie? This is because "desire born of ignorance enters into it." This refers to the craving driven by the two forces of existence and ignorance, which is its object. "How is he a practitioner?" This means that one who is not pacified will never become a practitioner. It is explained that for those without discipline, without truth, and without truthfulness, there is no imputation of "practitioner" even in the conventional sense; one becomes a practitioner only if one possesses both of these. So, what is the ultimate practitioner? It is said that there are two kinds of noble beings: those with remaining afflictions and those without. Among them, those with remaining afflictions begin with the seven, starting from the stream-enterer, and this is one verse. "Merely shaving the head does not make one a practitioner." This statement is a definite meaning. "Whose sins have been pacified" refers to one in whose continuum, through the power of the path of seeing, the actions of body and so forth that are faults have been separated from the cause of bad rebirths. "Then, the wise should know that he is a practitioner" means that one should know and understand that that person is a practitioner of the Buddha in the ultimate sense. Starting from the noble ones without remaining afflictions, it is said, "Which sins, great and small," and so forth. "Those whose sins are pacified" refers to those who have abandoned and relinquished sins through the path of meditation. What is that? It refers to "great and small sins," which are abandoned through the meditation of the three realms.
