Not to mention, any noble person is like that. To practice universally like that means to eradicate the unpleasantness that becomes the cause of others' gains. Again, in order to prevent future arising, it is said, "Like cutting off the head of a palm tree," which means to make it without seed. What is similar to the head of a palm tree is the top of the palm tree. Just as cutting off the top of a palm tree will not allow it to grow again, so too should it be abandoned. Therefore, "in days and nights" and so on are always easy. In order to show that those without faith are not to be relied upon by the holy ones, it is said, "Like a dry well" and so on. Monks, do not rely on a person without faith. What is the reason for that? Relying on a person without faith is suffering. Because relying on a person without faith, one will engage in misconduct with the body, engage in misconduct with speech, and even be born in hell. The verses on the white side also speak of these two. The so-called faithless person refers to a person whose mind is separated from faith. The so-called not to be relied upon means not to be approached, not to be associated with. "Like a dry well," refers to the place where water is to be drawn, that is, wells, ponds, and so on. Just as a dry well without water is not relied upon by those seeking water. However, if a well has no water and is dry, but if it is dug, will it give water? If asked in this way, the answer is "if" and so on. If ponds and so on have no water and are dry, even if those seeking water dig everywhere, it will not appear immediately. Even if it appears, muddy, foul-smelling water will appear. The so-called muddy, foul-smelling water refers to that which has such a rotten smell, like having dirt. "A wise person should rely on a faithful person," means that anyone who has correct realization should rely on a faithful person. Here an example is given, "Like one who desires water to the ocean," for example, one who desires water, wanting to bathe, drink, and enter into it.

Relying on the great lake. What kind of lake is it? It is said: It is called "Much Water," where there is much water, that is "Much Water," meaning it is drinkable by crows. Clear means free from turbidity and extremely clean. Becoming cool means that it is completely surrounded by the shade of banyan trees, making it satisfying. Without turbidity means without dust, without poisonous beings such as Nagas, without mud and algae, etc., causing turbidity. Just as one would approach such a lake when desiring to bathe and drink, those who seek many excellent qualities should also be more intimate with those who are unwavering, have pure thoughts, benefit others and make them happy, are free from ignorance and hypocrisy, and have unclouded faith, so that they can achieve the fruits they desire in their hearts. The wise should associate with those who have faith, not others. To show this, it is said, "Attachment or non-attachment," and so on. The venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, from one side of the monastery, in the morning, having put on their lower garments and Dharma robes, took their bowls and entered a Brahmin city for alms. Other heretics greatly insulted and beat them, even filling their bowls with dust. Faithful Brahmins, however, made offerings to them. The two of them neither liked hell and heaven nor liked happiness, and under their influence, these words were spoken. Attachment refers to showing attachment to certain faithful and wise Brahmins and virtuous patrons. The word "or" means that it is also acceptable not to be attached, because some wicked people will generate hatred towards the holy ones. "He does not anger the Buddha." This means that great beings, whether attached or not, become the cause of sentient beings with and without faith, and do not anger the Buddha, do not change. Why? Because the Buddha is free from desire in the three realms. If he cannot anger the Buddha, what should he do? It is said: Abandon the unbelievers.
