It is called having conduct. The so-called good meditation is shown for the sake of good service, and the faults are abandoned for the sake of abandoning all defilements. Abandonment is elimination, by which the latent tendencies are abandoned. The so-called wise person here refers to focusing on equanimity. From the mind of equanimity, one knows the truth as it is. With these words, the result is imputed from the cause. Therefore, faith also enters. The aggregates of morality, samadhi, and wisdom depend on it, that is, the one who has abandoned defilements. The so-called one with good conduct is the one who has good conduct and nature, that is, the nature of a noble person, praised by noble people. Saying is speaking. In order to show that the one with faith is worthy of offering at all times, it is said that faith and morality, and so on. Wherever the venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana and their retinue went, the king and the king's ministers would respectfully serve them. After hearing such occasions, these words were spoken. Wherever faith exists, there is faith. Only those with faith can have morality, so it is said that morality is perfect, that is, encountering the Pratimoksha vows. From those with morality, generosity will become perfect, so it is said to have generosity, that is, to completely give away everything that is possessed, and not to hold on to other possessions out of ignorance. The benefits of having generosity are stated, that is, completely abandoning stinginess, that is, being free from miserliness. As it is said, giving can wash away the stinginess in the mind and the dust of the faults of attachment. Therefore, with oneself completely pure, wherever one goes, one will be worshiped by the gods and people who can distinguish. With faith and perfect morality, body and speech are purified, and one's own benefit is perfected. With generosity and abandoning stinginess, the benefit of others is shown to be perfect. In order to show that faith and the wealth of wisdom are the best of wealth, it is saidྲས་པ། How does a wise person live in the world? etc. A merchant who was attached to treasures buried countless precious jewels in the ground, thinking to himself: If I were to unearth all the treasures and sell the most precious of them, but I do not know which is the most precious. I should go to where the Blessed One resides and ask. From this thought, the Blessed One spoke these words. What is "in"? It means "in what place." "The world of living" refers to the world of beings or sentient beings. "To rely on" means to obtain. Regarding "faith and wisdom," the particularly excellent wisdom here refers to wisdom. What is it that one relies on? It is said: The wise. One who is not wise does not cultivate these two, nor does he strive for them. This is to explain the combination of knowledge with reason. "These are the supreme wealth of the wise": Why is the wealth of the wise considered supreme? Because it is the source of all perfections. "Other wealth is merely ordinary": For those who have fully realized, the precious jewels such as gold that are revered by ordinary people are not worthy of praise, because they are the source of all suffering. "Ordinary" means that it must be abandoned and is the cause of falling into lower realms. To show the merchant, the Buddha spoke these words, because he lacked faith and his wisdom was shallow, so both of these are pointed out here. Just as one knows the sign of fire from smoke, to show the sign of invisible faith, the Buddha said, "Desiring to see the noble ones," and so on. Monks, these three are the signs of faith. The Buddha spoke extensively on this. The noble one is one who has gone far from sin. Desiring to see those who possess qualities and striving, means desiring to see, because one approaches again and again to meet them. Because one who has no faith, even if persuaded by others, will not go to the noble one because of disbelief. "Delighting in hearing the sacred Dharma": That is, being attached to hearing well-spoken teachings such as those that reveal the truth, even at the cost of one's life.
