Regarding impermanence, desire, and craving, Likewise, mindfulness and joy, Morality, good conduct, and truthful words, Action and faith, these are the ten. Brahmins, completely abandon desire, And cut off the cycle with diligence. Without completely abandoning desire, Liberation cannot be attained by anyone. Those weak wanderers, Gather together again because of afflictions. Only through steadfast diligence, Is it possible to accomplish what needs to be done. All those weak actions, And ascetic practices filled with afflictions, And impure celibacy, Do not think that they will transform into a great purpose. Just as holding an arrow incorrectly, Can cause the hand to be severed, So too, if the conduct of a renunciate is not properly guarded, It will lead one closer to hell. Just as holding an arrow correctly, Will not cause the hand to be severed, So too, if the conduct of a renunciate is properly guarded, It will lead one closer to nirvana. Not understanding the nature of a renunciate, And the difficulties of crossing over and enduring, And all those who are weak and will regret, Many sufferings will arise. Constantly regretting, Being controlled by conceptual thoughts, Without subduing the mind, How can one practice the conduct of a renunciate? Wrongly ordained, delighting in wrongdoing, Dwelling at home, engaging in wrong actions, Relying on unparalleled suffering, Only increases the suffering of rebirth. Wearing patched robes, Mostly not truly disciplined, Having a nature of sin, delighting in sin, Those sinful ones go to the lower realms. Like a vine on a sala tree, Whoever is extremely immoral, Like an enemy to oneself, They wish to act in that way. Until the head turns gray, Still not understanding the wisdom of elders, That is merely aging, That is called a foolish old person. Whoever abandons virtue and vice, And practices celibacy, Abandoning the community and practicing alone, That is called a true elder. Without discipline and speaking falsely, Merely shaving the head does not make one a renunciate. Those who are foolish and indulge in desire, How can they be renunciates? Without discipline and speaking falsely, Merely shaving the head does not make one a renunciate. Whoever has pacified sin, The wise know that they are renunciates. Without discipline and speaking falsely, Merely shaving the head does not make one a renunciate. Those who are greatly sinful

Subtle indeed! Those who act after examining everything, and those whose sins are pacified, are said to be ascetics. A Brahmin is one who has abandoned sins, an ascetic is one who practices peace. One who has thoroughly abandoned the defilements of self is therefore called a renunciate. This is the eleventh chapter, the assembly of ascetics. When one sees the Four Noble Truths with wisdom, and by thoroughly understanding this path, completely cuts off the craving for existence. Just as the wind raises dust, and rain makes it subside. When one sees with wisdom, then all conceptualizations will become peaceful. Whoever understands well will perfectly exhaust birth and death, and will certainly be liberated from the world. That wisdom is the most important. Among truths, the Four Truths are the truth, and among paths, the Eightfold Path is supreme. Among the two-legged, the one with eyes is supreme, and among dharmas, detachment is supreme. When one sees with wisdom that all conditioned things are impermanent, then one will become disenchanted with suffering, and this path will become pure. When one sees with wisdom that all conditioned things are suffering, then one will become disenchanted with suffering, and this path will become pure. When one sees with wisdom that all conditioned things are emptiness, then one will become disenchanted with suffering, and this path will become pure. When one sees with wisdom that all conditioned things are without self, then one will become disenchanted with suffering, and this path will become pure. I have shown you the path that cuts off the dart of craving. The Tathagata is the teacher, and you should all strive. I have shown you the path that removes the dart of craving. The Tathagata is the teacher, and you should all strive. Since there is no other path that can completely purify views except this one, abide in meditative concentration and abandon the bonds of Mara. This is the straight path, this is the path that conquers the other shore. Like a swan traversing the lake, the one and only path. Shakyamuni Buddha, having realized quiescence, repeatedly taught this path in the assembly. With compassion that realizes the end of birth and death and benefits beings, he revealed the one and only path of liberation. Through this path, one has already crossed over the many rivers, and likewise will cross over, and will enable others to cross over. Extremely
