What is ignorance? It is delusion. Those are not virtuous themselves, and also become the root of other non-virtues, therefore they are the roots of non-virtue. Making the sprout of undesirable existence manifest, the meaning of unease is the meaning of non-virtue. Or, making an unwholesome form manifest, the meaning of unfamiliarity is the opposite of the former. The roots that are not declared are four: desire, view, pride, and ignorance. The first of these is the ten types of desire belonging to the form and formless realms. The second is the twenty-four views that exist therein, and the view of the aggregates of existence and the view of holding to extremes belonging to the desire realm. The third is the ten types of pride belonging to that. The fourth is the ignorance itself that exists therein, and the two types of ignorance that exist here, associated with the view of the aggregates of existence and the view of holding to extremes. These four are considered to be the roots that are not declared. Because of the three concentrations, namely, the concentrators who have a strong share of desire, view, and pride, those arise due to the power of ignorance. The meaning of virtue and non-virtue is undeclared, and they do not cause the manifestation of pleasant and unpleasant results. Those are also roots and have become the root of other undeclared things, therefore they are the undeclared. Bonds are of nine types: attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, view, holding as supreme, doubt, jealousy, and stinginess. Among these, the desire of the three realms, the nature of attachment is like melted beeswax sticking, not following the Dharma, attachment itself is a bond, so it is the bond of attachment. Always tormenting beings, the nature of harmful thought, the Dharma like the seed of a root is anger, anger itself is a bond, so it is the bond of anger. The nature of being conceited, focusing on oneself and others, the Dharma like a stiff person is pride. It also has seven types, namely, pride.
