Treatise entitled "Entering the Abhidharma" Treatise entitled "Entering the Abhidharma" In Sanskrit: Prakaraṇa Abhidharma Avatāra Nāma. In Tibetan: Treatise entitled "Entering the Abhidharma". Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Whose speech's rays of light shatter the darkness in the hearts of gods and humans, the root of evil destinies. To that stainless circle of omniscience, to the sun-like Buddha, I pay homage! Those who, through the method of Abhidharma, uproot the ignorance regarding the characteristics of phenomena, And have become the abode of the words of the Omniscient One, to them I bow my head in homage. To those whose speech, obscured by the darkness of the poorly spoken words of the dull-witted, Is illuminated by the lamp, to that maker of the lamp I pay homage. Some, though virtuous, are of a nature to possess the fortune to grasp the meaning and words of all the scriptures of the King of Sages, but are completely ruined by the loss of not having obtained it due to being hindered by temporary activities. And some of weak intellect become frightened by merely hearing the reading of the Abhidharma. Yet, there are those who always wish to understand it. Therefore, in order to make them happy, I compose this "Entering the Ocean of the Characteristics of the Abhidharma." Thus, the Sugatas' entities are eight: form, feeling, perception, formations, consciousness, space, non-analytical cessation, and analytical cessation. Of these, form is of two kinds: the elements and form derived from the elements. The elements are four: the earth, water, fire, and wind elements. The elements are so called because they hold their own and common characteristics, and because they hold all forms that are caused by them. The nature of these is solidity, liquidity, heat, and motion. The functions are to be a basis, to combine, to ripen, and to move, according to their number. These are also great and will become elements, therefore they are great elements. Space is not a great element. Because they pervade the form that is caused by them. Because of being unnecessary and impossible, four.

It is like the legs of a chair. What arises from the elements are the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, as well as the aspects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and that which is not a discriminator. Because it arises from the elements, it is what arises from the elements, meaning it relies on the elements. Among these, the eye is like the support of eye consciousness, having the function of seeing form, it is form. This also separately shows the faculties of ear, nose, tongue, and body. Form has two aspects: the nature of color and the nature of shape. As the Blessed One said, it will become bad in color and bad in shape. Among these, the form of color has twelve aspects: blue, yellow, red, white, cloud, smoke, dust, fog, shadow, sun, light, and darkness. Shape has eight aspects: long, short, square, round, flat, non-flat, convex, and concave. Among these, fog is mist. Light is the light of the moon, stars, fire, medicine, and jewels. Shadow is where things appear. The opposite of this is darkness. Square is quadrilateral. Round is circular. Flat is the same shape. Non-flat is not the same shape. The remainder has been explained in the explanation of terms. These twenty are distinguished by eye consciousness and the consciousness derived from it. Sound is of two kinds, distinguished by the difference between the great elements that can be grasped and those that cannot be grasped. Among these, those that belong to the body are those that can be grasped, that is, the meaning related to thought. The opposite is what cannot be grasped. What is produced by the former is produced from the cause of the great elements that can be grasped, such as the hand and the sound of speech. What is produced by the latter is produced from the cause of the great elements that cannot be grasped, such as the sound of wind, forest, and flowing water. It is divided into four types: that which indicates sentient beings and that which does not indicate sentient beings. For example, the sound of speech indicates sentient beings. The remainder does not indicate sentient beings.
