Furthermore, the sound of emanated speech appears as sentient beings. The remainder does not appear as sentient beings. This again changes into eight aspects due to the distinction between agreeable and disagreeable. These eight aspects are also discerned by the ear consciousness and the mind consciousness led by it. Odors are of three kinds: fragrant, foul, and neutral. Fragrant odor causes the great elements of the senses to increase. The opposite of that is foul odor. The opposite of both is neutral odor. These three aspects are also discerned by the nose consciousness and the mind consciousness led by it. Taste has six distinctions: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, hot, and astringent. These six are also discerned by the tongue consciousness and the mind consciousness led by it. One aspect of tangible objects has seven aspects: smoothness, roughness, heaviness, lightness, coldness, hunger, and thirst. Among these, smoothness is pliability, which refers to the meaning of being unbearable to touch. Roughness is coarse. Heaviness is what causes the scale to lower. Lightness is the opposite of that. Coldness is what causes one to desire warmth due to cold. Hunger is the cause of desiring food. Thirst is the cause of desiring drink. The result should be established upon the cause, as it is said in the scriptures, the Buddhas are "the arising of happiness," and so forth. When the great elements gather, if the element of fire and water is greater, it is smooth. If the element of earth and wind is greater, it is rough. If the element of earth and water is greater, it is heavy. If the element of fire and wind is greater, it is light. If the element of water and wind is greater, it is cold. If the element of wind is greater, it is hunger. If the element of the fire realm is greater, it is thirst. These seven and the four great elements are all discerned by the body consciousness and the mind consciousness led by it. Mind and the phenomena arising from mind, because they make others aware, are therefore discriminative. Similarly, because they do not make others aware, they are non-discriminative, just as saying "not a Brahmin," one says "not" to what is similar to it. Its characteristic is discrimination.

That which is produced by the distinction of expression, mind, and the great elements, is undistracted, and is either a mind that is not it or is without mind, whatever is the continuum of good and non-virtuous form, that is not the accumulation of the cause for establishing monks and so on, that is non-expression. If that does not exist, then the establishment of monks and so on would be impossible. The Blessed One also said that from the basis of merit arising from material things, merit constantly and continuously increases. That also has three aspects because it is encompassed by discipline and non-discipline, and by turning back from both. Discipline also has three aspects by the distinction of individual liberation, concentration, and non-outflow. The discipline of individual liberation is: monk and nun, novice monk and novice nun, layman and laywoman, and the distinction of time-limited discipline, there are eight types, and that is only belonging to the desire realm. The discipline of concentration is the form that follows meditative stabilization, and it belongs only to form. The discipline of non-outflow is also the form that follows non-outflow meditative stabilization, and it is non-associated. Non-discipline is whatever continuum of non-virtuous form exists in the continuums of hunters and bird catchers and fishermen and prison guards, and cattle catchers and executioners and so on. Non-discipline and non-non-discipline is also building temples and stupas and gardens for the Sangha, and prostrating to stupas and offering incense and so on, holding them as deities, and whatever continuum of good and non-virtuous form arises from fists and slaps and so on. Although non-expression is momentary, it is said that way because the type is mentioned. Obtaining the discipline of individual liberation is obtained through proper adoption. The first seven are for as long as life lasts. The eighth is for one day. The abandonment of the first seven is through renouncing the precepts, and death, and cutting off the root of virtue, and being born as a hermaphrodite. The abandonment of the eighth is those same things, and the passing of the night. By obtaining the mind that engages in form, one obtains the discipline of concentration, because it is connected with the mind.
