These twenty aspects are also known by the eye consciousness as its own nature. The mind consciousness knows its own and the common nature. "Guided by that" means guided by the eye consciousness. "Guided" here refers to the object that is the immediate cause. "Sound is of two kinds, distinguished by the difference between the great elements of grasping and not grasping," means there are two kinds. It emits sound and calls things by it, so it is sound. The difference between the great elements of grasping and not grasping shows two kinds of causes. What is the meaning of "grasping"? It refers to that which has flesh, blood, and fat. If so, then in the realm of form, there would be the fault of non-grasping. If it is said that mind and mental factors are held by the two, benefit and harm, even so, for those who have entered into cessation and non-conceptualization, it would become non-grasping. Therefore, whatever is not separated from the senses is grasping. What is different from that is non-grasping. Having done so, it is said to belong to the body. "My body" is called the body, which is synonymous with "self." Here, the five aggregates of close acquisition are designated as "self." "Belonging to the body" is synonymous with "becoming the body." Those that are now produced and not separated from the senses of the body are called grasping. Those that are intentionally grasped by children for the sake of happiness are synonymous with grasping. "What is produced by the former" means what is proven. That is born from the cause of the great elements of grasping, such as the sound of hands and speech. The latter, that which is produced by non-grasping, such as the sound of wind, forests, and flowing water. There are four kinds of showing sentient beings and showing non-sentient beings. Sentient beings refer to things such as vases and blankets, and showing them is called showing sentient beings. Is whatever shows sentient beings, showing sentient beings? For example, whatever has clear letters, such as letters called "A," etc. existing, is it showing sentient beings? Or, whatever generates the mind of sentient beings, what will that become? If that is showing sentient beings.

If that is the case, then the sound of horses and other sound-producing sounds would become a fault of not showing sentient beings. If anything generates the wisdom of sentient beings, then the sound of hands would also appear as sentient beings. After asking the question in this way, it was said: Whatever generates the wisdom of sentient beings shows sentient beings, just as the sound of speech makes one realize manifestly, the sound of hands does not. Others arise from the cause of the unapprehended great elements. Even if there is an interval in between, all appear in the manner of names, as it is said, "Your face is like a lotus petal, your eyes and their sweat are endowed with a fragrance like that." Emanations are the fruits from the desire realm up to the fourth dhyana. Among them, the desire realm is the nature of the four sources, namely the nature of form, smell, taste, and touch. The form realm is the nature of the two sources, namely the nature of form and touch. There, there is no smell and taste, because they are free from attachment to the food eaten in the realm. That is the fruit of the actual dhyana, not to be obtained by approximation, because it is an object of supreme joy. Among them, the emanations of the Buddhas are able to teach the Dharma even if the Tathagatas do not speak at all. The emanations of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas speak simultaneously. As it is said, "If one speaks, all the emanations will speak. The Tathagatas do not speak, all the emanations will speak." Regarding the distinction between pleasant and unpleasant, what is in accordance with the mind is pleasant. What is not in accordance with the mind is unpleasant, for example, the father's pleasantness is called holding the father. Thus, due to the difference of cause, the difference of substance, and the difference of qualities, sound becomes eight kinds. These eight kinds of sounds are also recognized by the ear consciousness as their own characteristics, and by the mind consciousness as their own and general characteristics. The source of sound has been explained. There are three kinds of smell: pleasant smell, foul smell, and neutral smell, so-called pleasant smell.
