For the sake of (producing), this cause (earth, water, fire, wind) is divided into five types. Because they are both great and also become the source (of phenomena), therefore, by saying "are great and also become the source," it is shown that although space is great, it is not a source. Why? Because space is not created. Those who say, "Whatever is empty is space," are speaking without understanding the limits of space. Space exists in a place. As it is said, "Past, future, space, non-discriminating, and formless dharmas do not exist in a place." Therefore, space is not a great element. These are great because they pervade all forms that are the cause. Pervasion is the nature of a place, not the nature of other things. Even in the formless realm, noble beings can obtain the uncontaminated precepts of the past and future. Alternatively, because the abodes of the elements have great differences, (they) are the majority. As the Blessed One said, "Ananda, this great (earth) depends on water, and water depends on wind." Likewise, the vast majority of the fire element will burn everything below the Brahma world. The vast majority of the water element will harm everything below the Clear Light. The vast majority of the wind element will destroy everything below the Merit Increase. It is also said, "If the earth element is violently disturbed, the rivers will stop. When the rivers stop, the wind will not flow. When those winds do not flow, the places will dry up. Dryness and water will cause it to rot, and fire will cause it to burn." Therefore, it should be understood as universally present. Because it is not needed and not possible, there are only four, like the legs of a chair. Saying "five are not needed, three are not possible," mentioning the legs of a chair is for easy understanding. If the four great elements gather, it is called "as the cause." From the categories of "the four great elements" and "they are as the cause," if "the four great elements" are mentioned, it is to show that they can only function after gathering, and to understand that the cause and effect are different. If the four great elements gather, the form that is the cause will manifest.

The four great elements are not manifested and accomplished by the gathering of the four great elements, but each one depends on the other three great elements, because it is said in the sutra, "One cause is one." In the Sutra of Entering the Womb, it says that it does not depend on its own nature, nor does it depend on similar substances, therefore it does not depend on its own nature and similar substances. The great elements are gatherings that do not separate. How does it manifest? It is manifested in the sutra, that is, it is said in the Sutra of Entering the Womb: "Joyful, the soft body formed from the impurity of parents, the hardness of which is the abiding of the earth element. The wetness is the water element. The warmth is the fire element. The lightness and shaking are the wind element. Joyful, if there is earth element but no water element, it will be dry or scattered. Joyful, like holding flour or ashes. Joyful, because it is held by the water element, it will not be scattered. Joyful, if there is water element but no earth element, it will drip because it is thin. Joyful, like oil or water. Joyful, in this way, if the water element holds the earth element, it will not be scattered. If the earth element holds the water element, it will not drip. Joyful, if there are earth element and water element but no fire element, it will rot, be destroyed, and stick together. Joyful, like the rotting, destruction, and sticking together of meat in summer. Joyful, if there are earth element and water element but no fire element, it will rot, be destroyed, and stick together. Joyful, if there are earth element, water element, and fire element but no wind element, it will stay there and will not grow, increase, and become vast. The internal great elements arise from the ripening of past karma, possessing the condition that one cause is one, these earth element make it stable, the water element gathers it, the fire element ripens it, and the wind element moves it, it will grow, increase, and become vast." Therefore, the great elements are gatherings that do not separate. Thus, the form of the earth element has been temporarily described, and then the transformation from the great elements is described.
