Ro. That which accords with its own nature is the generality of its own nature. That which accords with one aspect is the generality of that aspect. That which accords with all exhaustiveness is the generality of all exhaustiveness. The generality of aspect is precisely impermanence and suffering. Therefore, all conditioned things are precisely impermanent. All things with outflows are precisely suffering. The generality of all exhaustiveness is precisely emptiness and selflessness. Therefore, selflessness is that all phenomena are selfless. Emptiness is that which is empty of the self conceived by the tirthikas, and so forth. Why are things from earth and so on up to the final non-manifestative objects called form? Because they are capable of being formed. Thus, the Bhagavan said: "Monks, because it is formed by form, therefore it is called the aggregate of grasping at form." How does it become form? When touched by the hand, it is form. And when touched by a stick, and when touched by a clod, and when touched by a weapon, and cold, and heat, and hunger, and thirst, and mosquitoes, and horseflies, and wind, and sun, and poisonous touches, it becomes form because it is formed by form. It becomes harmful. It becomes apparent, that is, it is said to become apparent in the hand and so on. What is its harm? What is its becoming apparent? Whatever is changed in that way by the causes, that is called harm and becoming apparent. Therefore, this fault does not occur for formless things, because the extent of their transformation is not observed. Therefore, their transformation can be inferred. If the past and the future and the infinitesimal and the non-manifestative are not form because they are not formed by sticks and so on, how are they called form? They are also form, because they possess its characteristics. The past, although it is not now form, is still form. The future, which has the nature of arising, will become form. That which does not have the nature of arising is also form because it is of the same kind, like that which is to be burned. For example, that which is not yet burned is also called that which is to be burned, because wood and so on are of the category of that which is to be burned.

Subtle forms do not arise solely from themselves; rather, they arise from the elements that have been propelled by previous actions and have become causes and effects, and from the subtle particles that arise from the elements in dependence upon each other. Therefore, because they do not arise individually but are accumulated together, they become forms and have obstruction. The form in which subtle particles are accumulated is form, and it is obstruction. Non-manifest forms, because they have no obstruction, even though they are considered to be forms that do not exist, such as space, are the places where forms arise, namely, the great elements are forms. To establish it there is to establish it also there, just as when a tree moves, its shadow moves. Establishing the bases of eye consciousness, etc., such as the eye, etc., does not become the fault of establishing, because the bases of non-manifest forms are the elements, and they always arise together with them, and because non-manifest forms have no other bases. The similar parts of the eye, etc., and the distinctions similar to them, do not always arise together with consciousness. The bases of the consciousnesses of the eye, etc., are not only the eye, etc., but also the mind that arises simultaneously with the eye, etc., and immediately after them, are their bases. Therefore, since both form and formless sense faculties become the bases, it does not become the fault that they become forms. Form has been briefly summarized and differentiated. The second fascicle of "Collected Essence of the Extensive Commentary on Entering the Abhidharma." That which is averted from desire, aversion, and both, is called the place of origin of contact. Contact is the mind's touching of an object. Desire is the contact that becomes the experience of pleasure. That which is in accordance with pleasant feeling is that which becomes the experience of pleasure, which is a synonym for generating pleasant feeling. Likewise, one should also understand that which is averted from aversion and both. The place of origin is the cause; that which belongs to any feeling is called the place of origin of contact. The distinction of the state of body and mind is that which changes from the previous state to another state. That meaning is serenity and suffering.
