Moreover, in the path of liberation, only three kinds of knowledge are attained. What are the three? They are the knowledge of the realm of magical power, the knowledge of recollecting past lives, and the knowledge of the varieties of minds. What is the meaning of saying "etc."? It is to show that in the path of liberation of the meditative grounds for accomplishing virtues such as liberation, overcoming, and cessation, mundane knowledge, future knowledge, and knowledge of others' minds are also attained. Knowledge of others' minds is included in the reality of meditation. This is to show this meaning. Ordinary beings attain the two, mundane knowledge and knowledge of minds, in the final path of liberation from desire in the desire realm and meditation. Furthermore, why is it not mentioned that the fourth meditation is free from desire? Because it is included in the sphere of infinite space. Also, knowledge of others' minds is not included in the formless realm, because knowledge of minds must be cultivated based on form, and because it is a meditative ground. "The power of the son of no desire" is a distinction in the name of power. "Time as it is" means to combine with everything. How does it combine? "Because of living for a very long time and a short time," if beings have a lifespan of eighty thousand years, then their lifespan is eighty thousand years, and if they have a lifespan of one hundred years, then their lifespan becomes one hundred years. How can the Blessed One abide in freedom from afflictions when afflictions arise in the continuum of those like Angulimala? There is no fault in this, because the compassionate ones, wishing to permanently eliminate the afflictions of others, sometimes abandon afflictions indifferently for the sake of a very great need, because they possess the time of direct realization. Because the hearers are separated from thought and latent tendencies and knowledge, they cannot eliminate afflictions in every way, so they eliminate them temporarily. Here, because what is to be abandoned by seeing cannot be guarded, desire and so on are mentioned. "At the limit of meditation" means because it is contrary to the cause of suffering and because it is the easiest of paths.

Therefore, it is said that supernormal cognition does not directly perceive the formless realms because supernormal cognition is the realm of the fourth dhyana. Supernormal cognition has objects of itself and the lower realms, and it should be understood that supernormal cognition is similar to supernormal cognition. If one cannot remember the formless realms, then, in the sutras, the Blessed One said that he remembers all things that previously existed in the form realm or the formless realm, along with their characteristics. How is it said in the sutras? Some say that this is known through unerring inference of them. Others say that everything is known merely through intention, because the realm of knowledge of the Buddhas is inconceivable. Since the methods of abandoning afflictions, such as "place," are explained in detail in the sixth chapter of the Abhidharmakosha, the practice of generating the supernormal cognition of exhaustion of outflows is not discussed here. If the supernormal cognition of exhaustion of outflows is mindfulness, because it is focused on cessation, then if the side focused on cessation is the mindfulness of dharma, and only the continuum side of the exhausters of outflows, then it is the four mindfulnesses, so there is no contradiction. Teacher Sangharakshita said that knowing death and birth can dispel universal ignorance of future lives. The supernormal cognition of exhaustion of outflows can dispel universal ignorance of the intermediate state. Sound does not manifest as an emanation because it is uninterrupted. Since emanations are without mind, there are also no mind and dharma ayatanas. Why is it said that emanations are without mind? Should it be said in the scriptures that emanations have mind or do not have mind? The answer is: it should be said that they do not have mind. Divine eyes or ears are different from this because they are manifested through seeing and hearing, so they are always accompanied by consciousness. The explanation of the seventh chapter ends here. In excellent dhyana, there is no investigation but there is analysis, so in order to eliminate the doubt that there is no analysis at the same time, "there is no investigation," etc., is widely explained. In excellent dhyana, there is joy.
