DTG147 0003.The Explanation of the Abhidharmakośa Following the Characteristics, called Gangwa Pel.།.g2.0f

English

That is what is said. If it is said that one who is free from desire from the third dhyana relies on the lower ground, this is from the inability to do so, etc., up to the second dhyana. Any one of them is possible, because they do not have the feeling of pleasure. This is only one who is born in the desire realm, because there is no path of seeing there. This will surely manifest the special fruit of the path, the third dhyana's uncontaminated path. If it is not so, then the noble one born above it, that is, the fourth dhyana above the third dhyana, or in the formless realm, will not have the feeling of pleasure. Therefore, if he abandons the contaminated third dhyana by moving from it, and does not manifest the contamination, then he will not have both the contaminated and uncontaminated feeling of pleasure. The noble one born in it is said to surely have the feeling of pleasure, because it is said in the sutra that the feeling of pleasure is not possessed by the ordinary person born in the fourth dhyana and the formless realm, but the noble one possesses it. Others say that although this is written in the commentary, it is obvious that it is the view of other schools, because it says "others say." "The noble one possesses the feeling of pleasure" is only said in terms of existence. Others say that this is indicated by the characteristics of other places, but this is not desirable. Because they engage in non-dharmic actions due to wrong discriminations. Not engaging in non-dharma, that is, non-virtuous actions, such as practicing impurity, etc., if one practices impurity, etc., with a non-virtuous mind, then the one who is free from desire only engages in dharma because he has abandoned non-virtue, and does not engage in non-dharma. In order to treat equally, that is, in any case, the fourth dhyana must be made into a number of nine nines. If it is counted as nine by the distinction of abandoning the nine kinds of afflictions, then it will become unequal treatment, because there is no ninth kind in the fourth dhyana. One who is free from desire from its ninth form is close to the formless realm.

It is because of approaching that. Here, the upward transition is also taken as approaching the form realm, but not approaching the formless realm. Therefore, the meditator here does not count the one who is free from desire from the ninth aspect, because it is approaching the formless realm. Like the five aspects of the Vajra-like Samadhi, in the three formless realms, there are two ones, two fours, and twenty other ways of abandoning. Furthermore, why does one only focus on the cessation of other grounds, like the suffering and origin of the peak of existence, but not on the suffering and origin of other grounds? Because one is free from desire from the lower grounds, therefore the eight aspects of the peak of existence are the body. Furthermore, why does one only focus on the cessation of one's own ground and the higher ground, like in meditation, but not on the lower ground? Because one does not focus on the suffering of the lower ground, one cannot focus on its cessation. Suffering is also all that is contaminated, the essence of the formless realm is virtuous. The realm of activity is the lower contaminated ground. This is also a reason. Meditations are not rejected because they are all-encompassing. Meditative virtuous objects are not nine. It will be explained as such. Like the Vajra-like Samadhi, adding four twos to two twos makes fourteen. Similarly, adding two and four to what was previously said makes thirty-two and twenty-four. Furthermore, why is it said that the formless realms only focus on the antidote to their own and higher grounds, but not on the antidote to the lower grounds? Because it is said that in all aspects, one has truly transcended the perception of form and so on. In terms of the antidote to the lower grounds, it is because one focuses on its dissimilar aspects. If so, there is a focus on the antidote to the lower grounds, because they are mutual causes. How should this statement be explained? In that case, because no distinction is made, the nine paths that are in accordance with the aspect of subsequent knowledge are said to focus on the antidote to the lower grounds. However, it is not specifically indicated that what is included in the sphere of infinite space and so on focuses on the antidote to the lower grounds. The way in which it is shown to focus on the antidote to the lower grounds is shown.

This is only for those who have attained meditative stabilization. The saying, "In order to obtain one that is included in the fruit of that attainment," is in order to obtain one that is included in once-returner and non-returner. For this reason, it is extensively explained in the sutra that in order to obtain the attainment of all the fruits of the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, one that is included in the fruit of that attainment. The saying, "The attainment of separation is without outflows," is explained as follows: "For worldly beings who are separated from desire, and for noble ones, there are two kinds of attainment of separation." Therefore, after the fruit of the worldly path is abandoned, a hundred similar attainments of separation without outflows arise, and they hold onto those abandonments. For example, although a eunuch is a substance of samsara, whatever is sealed with the king's seal is like something that no one would say belongs to a noble being. The saying, "By its power," is by the power of the attainment of separation without outflows. The saying, "Completely extinguished, not dying," here it is thought that complete grasping is like this: from the fruit, extinction is without death. If it were not so, like worldly beings separated from desire, it would die, then complete extinction would be without death. What is meant by "lineage"? The Vaibhashikas say that it is a root of virtue, and it becomes distinct by its distinction. The Sutrantikas, however, consider it to be the power of the entity of the seed of mind, which is a phenomenon of complete extinction. Even in the state of ordinary beings, there is a seed, so it is called the lineage of the phenomenon of complete extinction. It should be understood in the same way for phenomena such as thinking of death. Other individuals should also be reckoned accordingly, which is following the Dharma, just as those who follow with faith are reckoned from the perspective of faculties, lineage, path, separation from desire, and basis. The term "accordingly" refers to those who follow the Dharma, those who attain through seeing, and those who are liberated in time and those who are liberated together.
