The Explanation of the Abhidharmakośa Following the Characteristics, called "Gangwa Pel." The Explanation of the Abhidharmakośa Following the Characteristics, called "Gangwa Pel." In Sanskrit: Abhidharmakoṣaṭīkālakṣaṇyāsāriṇīnāma (अभिधर्मकोशटीकालक्षण्यसारीणीनाम). In Tibetan: The Explanation of the Abhidharmakośa Following the Characteristics, called "Gangwa Pel." Homage to the noble Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta! He who dispels the darkness of his own mind, pacifies all the continuums of sentient beings who are the objects of all knowable things, and whose rays of limitless wisdom dispel the limits of those with and without afflictions. With a mind possessing compassion that pervades everything, and with the gesture of extending his hand to teach the Dharma, he leads beings from the swamp of saṃsāra. To him, I first pay homage! You have well understood the meaning, and the capable one with the mind of liberation, whatever Dharma treasury he has taught, I will diligently explain it. Because he intends to compose a treatise, he speaks in terms of the necessity of composing a treatise, which is to generate respect for the teacher and the treatise. By stating the perfection of one's own and others' benefit, one knows the greatness of the Bhagavan's nature, from which respect arises, because he possesses the perfection of abandonment and wisdom, and because he leads beings who are drowning in the swamp of saṃsāra, thereby connecting them to the ultimate fruit. Having generated respect, those who are drowning in the swamp of saṃsāra engage in activities such as reading, understanding, hearing, and thinking, and thus they will overcome it. Then, in order to prevent those listeners who are weak in memory and wisdom from being confused, the master Vasubandhu will classify the meaning of the explanation of the Abhidharmakośa. If one is to classify, then one must first state the necessity of the order of the eighth chapter itself. Although there are teachings that gather dharmas here, such as conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, one does not seek from this way of "contaminated and uncontaminated dharmas," and it is certain that this treatise is composed from the perspective of all afflictions and purification. Therefore, one should explain the aggregates, etc., as appropriate, from the perspective of all afflictions and purification.

Because it includes realms and sources, the aggregates and so on are first established. The realms are proclaimed because they are the most important, hence the name "Chapter on the Treasury of Realms." The entry and object of all defilements and purifications are through the gates of the senses. Therefore, the senses are closely arranged after that. Then, through the classification of realms, destinies, birthplaces, etc., it is explained how all defiled beings possessing the nature of realms and senses, and this world as a vessel, arise as the difference between the support and the supported, in the order of ignorance and so on, and the wheel of wind and so on. The arising of such limitless differences is not from the Lord of Power and so on, but from actions. Therefore, actions are explained immediately after that. Those actions that arise together with defilements have the power to produce rebirth, but this is not seen in those who are free from desire, so it is not the case with solitary individuals. Therefore, defilements are shown immediately after that. The order of entering defilements and purifications is as follows: entering into the unattractive, etc. This means that the establishment of the person who practices in that place is also shown there. Purification also means that defilements should be destroyed by wisdom, so it arises from wisdom. Immediately after that, wisdom and the qualities to be obtained by it are explained. From the sutra "When the mind is balanced, one knows it as it is," it is known that wisdom is not without meditative stabilizations. Therefore, meditative stabilizations and the qualities of the nature of meditative stabilization are shown. The determination of the person is only a connection that comes as an adjunct to the eighth chapter of the Treasury. If it exists clearly, but because it has the same necessity as the Explanation of Distinctions and so on, wouldn't composing this treatise become unnecessary? Because faults such as extensiveness, brevity, and scattering are seen in the Explanation of Distinctions and so on, and complete joy does not arise, this treatise called the Abhidharma Treasury is composed in order to benefit those whose minds are disturbed by the complexity of many affairs.
