Having abandoned extensive and concise elaborations, showing closely without disturbing the meaning, another concise Abhidharma-kośa has been composed. Therefore, it is not unnecessary to compose this. Thus, the verses are arranged closely. What is the connection? What is the necessity? What is the subject matter? "Desiring to compose a treatise" is called the connection. "In order to know the greatness of one's own teacher" is called the necessity. Among them, the prostration that precedes the statement of qualities is called the subject matter. Because it is to be familiarized, it is a quality, meaning that those who seek good meaning should become accustomed to it. "To all" refers to the perfection of abandonment. "Other" refers to the perfection of wisdom. "Rescuing beings from the mud of samsara" refers to the perfection of benefiting others. "Having prostrated to the one who teaches according to reality" refers to the perfection of the sole teacher of the three realms. Mentioning Abhidharma-kośa is to correct treatises such as logic. Mentioning kośa is to distinguish it from other kośas. Regarding "one's own teacher," it is because one has vowed to take refuge and to follow his teachings, so he becomes one's own teacher. Moreover, those who I have followed in indicating the path and the fruit of the path, from the time of generating bodhicitta, have vowed all sentient beings as objects of disciples, and for their benefit, have fully entered the assembly, and in order to realize perfect enlightenment, therefore this one is the teacher of all sentient beings themselves, and not others. Then, why are both words "Buddha Bhagavan" spoken? Because the word "Buddha" is without a close word, it can refer to all three: Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas. Therefore, it is spoken with Buddha Bhagavan as the main focus. The word Bhagavan is also misused by some who have not tamed their own minds, so "Buddha Bhagavan" is spoken. Or, because it is unreasonable to be without a close word, two words are spoken. If attachment and so on do not arise later towards all objects of knowledge

If it is completely destroyed in order to become a dharma-possessor, why is praise expressed only through ignorance? Because ignorance is the main thing. Furthermore, in order to show the perfection of the teacher himself. The perfection of the teacher himself is also the wisdom that is unobstructed to all, and the activity of leading beings out of samsara. Not being skilled in benefiting others, or benefiting them in a perverse way, is not a teacher. If even the Hearers and so forth do not completely separate from the ignorance of afflictions, then they will not be separated from the afflictions, karma, and birth of all afflictions, because these three are the cause of the ignorance of afflictions. Again, how can there be non-afflictive ignorance, so that the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas can reverse the three all-afflictions? Because affliction itself is the cause of all afflictions, non-affliction is not. Again, is only immaculate wisdom Abhidharma? It is said, no. What then? With followers. The retinue of wisdom, such as time and fruit, and so forth, and virtue itself, such as form and so forth that follow wisdom. For the wisdom that relies on the unimpeded, dhyana, and special dhyana, it is desired that the non-revealing form and followers are established by true speech, the limit of action, and deception, by which that is spoken. If the mind is the basis of all mental events, since the mind is the main thing, is it not said that the mind itself is immaculate, with followers, is Abhidharma? Because only wisdom has the ability to manifest action, sight, and object, only wisdom is the main thing. Showing only "with followers" is also to combine what arises from hearing and so forth, just as the nature of what is born is the four aggregates, so also what arises from hearing and thinking. What arises from meditation is the fifth aggregate, because there is the discipline of meditation in proximity, dhyana, and special dhyana. The proximity and the four formless ones are the four aggregates. That
