And because it possesses ease and joy, there is no investigation, so there is no examination. Therefore, investigation that possesses joy and investigation is not confused with examination, just like smoke on fire. It is said in the scriptures that only the dhyanas possess limbs, but the formless ones do not. To this, some say that it is because the taste is the same in quiescence. If coarse activities are established as limbs, then since the formless ones are more pacified, all the mind and mental factors have subtle activities, so it is impossible to establish limbs on them. In some places, concentration is more dominant, and other mental factors are not important. For one, the name of limb is also not appropriate. Therefore, limbs are established in the formless ones. Others say that wherever mental factors reach their limit, it is not hearing, but in the place of cessation, only those cessations similar to desire are established as limbs, that is, the first dhyana eliminates suffering and displeasure, the second dhyana eliminates examination and investigation, the third dhyana eliminates joy, and the fourth dhyana eliminates the feeling of pleasure. After that, no mental factor is completely eliminated, so there is no turning back. Therefore, the five limbs possessed by the first dhyana, namely examination, investigation, joy, pleasure, and concentration, are precisely because two, three, and four limbs are abandoned that the second, third, and fourth dhyanas are established. Among them, after abandoning two limbs, the second dhyana is established, because there is no examination and investigation in it. After abandoning three limbs, the third dhyana is established, because there is also no joy in it. After abandoning four limbs, the fourth dhyana is established, because there is also no pleasure in it. Precisely for this reason, in order to abandon them, the remaining dhyanas are established, so although the first dhyana has other mental factors, only five limbs are mentioned, and not feeling, etc. It is not because feeling, etc., are abandoned that higher dhyanas are established, because they all exist in all dhyanas. Therefore, those (feelings, etc.) of the first dhyana are not said to be limbs. The scriptures say "The first is also a noble one," meaning that by this, one will also become disgusted with one's own ground.

Because it possesses power, it is the nemesis of the underground, therefore it is without outflows. Then, how should we understand what is said in the Detailed Explanation that the mind of near attainment will become the mind of connection and the mind of death transference? Since the non-afflicted mind has no connection, it would be too much to say that all near attainments are like tasting flavors? It is not so, because for those, it is the obstruction of afflictions in equipoise, not the obstruction of afflictions in arising. To show this, it is said in detail, "with the mind of near attainment." How is this a non-selective cessation? Those momentary moments with outflows that immediately follow the arising from the non-learning, signless samadhi. If those did not arise, then the non-learning, signless moments would arise. Those non-learning, signless moments, because the causes and conditions are not complete, will be ceased by non-selective cessation, because non-selective cessation is focused on the aspect of peace. Because it is the aspect of entering into cessation, it is only the aspect of peace. Because there is no selective cessation for the outflowless, it is focused on non-selective cessation. Because of hating the noble path. How is it hated? Because in the aspects of emptiness and so on, it turns its back on it. For the time being, if it is said that the other two samadhis are focused on the aspects of emptiness and impermanence, so it is reasonable to hate the noble path, then how can the third, which is focused on the peaceful, unconditioned object, be said to hate the noble path? Because it praises the dharma that is the cause of entering the non-learning samadhi. Except for the two near attainments. It means that except for the near attainments of the second dhyana and so on, because those are entering into the aspects of peace and coarseness and so on, they determine the higher and lower objects, therefore they do not produce the seven noble path factors. Others say that loving-kindness is abiding from the depths of the heart towards all beings as if they were oneself. Compassion is not rejoicing in the suffering of others. Joy is the perfection of others
