For the time being, for the most part, the establishment of the person (Sanskrit: pudgala, 補特伽羅, person) who is certain to enter (the path) and is free from desire from desire is just like that. Gradual entry (into the path) should be declared, therefore, for the time being, it should be established in this way. Just as the nine forms of afflictions of the desire realm have been shown. In each ground, there are nine faults. Up to the peak of existence (Sanskrit: bhavāgra, 有頂). How are the faults? Likewise, so are the qualities. In each ground, there are its antidotes, the uninterrupted path and the path of liberation, and there are also nine qualities. How is it done? Of the small, medium, and large, etc. Because of the differences of small, etc. For example, the small of the small, the medium of the small, and the large of the small; likewise, the distinctions of the medium and the large are also threefold. Among them, the smallest of the small paths abandons the largest of the large afflictions, and likewise, the largest of the large paths goes up to the smallest of the small. Thus, all these nine kinds of afflictions, not only are they abandoned by the fruit, but also, if one stays as desired, it is the seventh time (of return). If one has not abandoned even one affliction that should be abandoned through cultivation, then that is a stream-enterer, and in between seven lives, one is born as the seventh time (of return). The so-called "staying as desired, it is the seventh time" refers to the worst of all. That is, the seven existences in which one is born elsewhere from here, and the seven intermediate existences, in which one takes rebirth among humans, and likewise among the gods. If one stays in the highest form of seven similar groups, then one is called the seventh time (of return). For the time being, not abandoning what should be abandoned through cultivation is just like that. Liberated from three or four kinds. In two or three lives, from lineage to lineage. The stream-enterer is called being born from lineage to lineage because he has abandoned three or four kinds of afflictions, and because he stays in one or two lives. Having destroyed between one and five kinds. One has entered the second fruit. If one who abides in the fruit has abandoned between one and five kinds (of afflictions), then that is one who has entered the second fruit. The sixth kind is exhausted. That is a once-returner. That is, one has attained the second fruit, among the gods...

It is for the sake of returning once from the human world. Those who abide in the fruit, the seven and eight faults are exhausted. One-interval birth, one-interval separation, and also those who have entered the third. Because of abandoning the seven or eight aspects, and because only one life remains, it is called one-interval separation. Because those nine are exhausted, they do not return. Those who are free from desire and attachment, because they do not return to the desire realm, are called non-returners. These are intermediate nirvana, activity, non-activity nirvana, and those who flow upwards. Those who attain nirvana in the intermediate state are those who attain nirvana in the intermediate state. Those who attain nirvana after birth are those who only live and do not die, and attain nirvana with the remaining aggregates, which is nirvana, because of diligence and the natural arising of the path. Those who attain nirvana with activity are those who, after birth, do not abandon effort and attain nirvana with activity, because of diligence and the non-natural arising of the path. Those who attain nirvana without activity are those who attain nirvana without activity, because of no diligence and the natural arising of the path. Those who flow upwards are those who, wherever they are born, do not attain nirvana there but go upwards. These are those who, after cultivating meditation, go to Akanistha. Among them, those who cultivate meditation attain nirvana in Akanistha. These are transcendence, half-transcendence, and all places. Death and transference. Wherever they die, those who reach the limit of Akanistha also have three types of distinctions, such as transcendence. Among them, those called transcendence are those who, after cultivating all the meditations here, experience the taste of the first meditation, completely fall from the third meditation, and are born in the Brahma host, and then cultivate the fourth meditation due to the power of previous habits, and then die and are born in Akanistha. This is called transcendence because it does not go in between. Those called half-transcendence are those who, after being born in the Pure Abodes from there, also transcend some other places and enter Akanistha. Death and transference in all places.
