The Lamp of Essential Meaning, a Commentary on the Treasury of Abhidharma. By Dignaga. The Lamp of Essential Meaning, a Commentary on the Treasury of Abhidharma. By Dignaga. In Sanskrit: Abhidharmamarmapradipanama Vritti. In Tibetan: The Lamp of Essential Meaning, a Commentary on the Abhidharma Treasury. Homage to the Buddha! He who completely destroys darkness for all, Delivers beings from the mire of samsara, And shows the truth as it is, Having paid homage to him, I will explain the treatise on the Abhidharma Treasury. Because one who wishes to compose a treatise should know the greatness of his own teacher, praise is offered to him first, and thus the homage is composed. "He who" is spoken with reference to the Buddha, the Bhagavan. "Darkness-destroying" means that it destroys darkness. "Completely destroys darkness for all" means that it destroys darkness in all ways. Ignorance is darkness because it is an obstacle to seeing the true meaning. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, found the antidote to it, and because it has become the nature of not arising later in all objects of knowledge, it is completely destroyed. Therefore, it is "completely destroys darkness for all." Self-Buddhas and Hearers also want to say that they have destroyed darkness for all because they are free from the delusion of afflictions, but it is not completely so. Thus, they have non-afflicted ignorance. "Delivers beings from the mire of samsara" is praise for accomplishing the benefit of others. Samsara is like a mire because it is the place where beings are universally attached and because it is difficult to cross. He delivers beings who are drowning there. "Shows the truth as it is" means that he shows the means of accomplishing the benefit of others. He delivers beings from the mire of samsara by showing the truth as it is when he shows it, not by the power of miracles and generosity. "Having paid homage to him" means that he states what is to be done at the beginning and says that he will explain the treatise. What treatise? The one called the Abhidharma Treasury. What is Abhidharma? Abhidharma is immaculate wisdom and its followers. Wisdom is the most

Distinguishing. "Immaculate" means without outflows. "With followers" means having retinue. Thus, the five aggregates without outflows are called Abhidharma. For the time being, this is the ultimate Abhidharma. Nominal designation is also: What and which treatise are for the sake of attaining it? What refers to the wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating, which is with outflows, and what is obtained from birth, along with its followers. What treatise refers to the fact that in order to attain that wisdom, it also becomes part of that collection, so it is called Abhidharma. In terms of definitive words, it is Dharma because it holds its own characteristics. Therefore, this is the ultimate Dharma, Nirvana, or Abhidharma because it is directed towards the characteristics of Dharma. How is this treatise a treasury of Abhidharma? Because here, its meaning is very accurate? Because this is its place, it is the Abhidharma Treasury. That is to say, this treatise of Abhidharma is like its treasury. Or, because this is extracted from it, Abhidharma is like the place of this treatise. Therefore, Abhidharma itself is its treasury, so this treatise is the Abhidharma Treasury. Or, why is Abhidharma taught, or who taught it first? It is said: "Without thoroughly distinguishing the dharmas, there is no way to pacify the afflictions. Afflictions also cause beings to wander in this ocean of samsara. Therefore, for the sake of thoroughly distinguishing the dharmas, the teacher taught it." Because Abhidharma is not taught, disciples cannot thoroughly distinguish the dharmas. What are those dharmas? It is said: "Dharmas with outflows and without outflows." This is a brief summary of all dharmas. So, what are the dharmas with outflows? It is said: "All conditioned dharmas except the path are called with outflows." The path of
