Because it is seen that they are stable and located below. Four, named "under the sun." Those are desire, view, pride, and ignorance. Unspecified desire, view, pride, and ignorance are the roots of the unspecified. Why? The three meditative states arise from ignorance. Thus, there are three meditative states: meditative states in which desire, view, and pride are dominant. Those also change due to the power of ignorance. In the sutra, it is said: The fourteen unspecified things that were spoken of are not unspecified. Questions that should be set aside are unspecified. Is it only those that are unspecified? No. However, there are four ways: answering in one way and distinguishing, answering by questioning and setting aside, death and birth and special excellence, self and other, and so on. If asked, "Will all sentient beings die?" one should answer in one way, saying, "They will die." If asked, "Will all sentient beings be born?" one should answer by distinguishing, saying, "Those with afflictions will be born, but those without afflictions will not." If asked, "Is this person particularly excellent or inferior?" one should ask, "Compared to which, a god or a bad rebirth?" and then answer. If asked, "Is there a sentient being other than the aggregates, or is there not?" because there is no substance of a sentient being, it should be set aside. Whatever subtle increase of whatever person increases on whatever object, therefore it is said that he is associated with that. One should say, "What is the past associated with?" up to "What is the present associated with?" What are these? It is said: Past and near-abiding desire, anger, and pride, whatever arises in whom is not abandoned, that thing is associated with it. Whatever thing, past and present desire, anger, and pride arise in and are not abandoned, that thing is associated with it, because those are afflictions of their own nature, so they do not necessarily occur in all places to all. With mind, to those future ones, all and whatever arises in whom is not abandoned, should be connected in this way. With mental desire and anger

Pride and those of the future possess all things of the three times. Others, such as desire and anger, only have the five aggregates of consciousness associated with future things. Such are the laws of birth. Those that do not arise possess all; the laws of non-arising possess all things of the three times. The remainder possess all. Views, doubt, and ignorance possess all things, because they are directed towards all afflictions. Do past and future things exist as substances? Or do they not? If they exist, then because they exist at all times, they would become permanent. If they do not exist, then how are they related to them? How do they possess them or are separated from them? The Vaibhashikas believe that because they possess the characteristics of the conditioned, they do not assert that the conditioned is permanent, but they clearly assert that they exist at all times. Why? Because it is said. The Blessed One said that if a past form did not exist, then a noble Shravaka with hearing would not fail to look at the past form, therefore, the past form exists. Secondly, consciousness arises dependent on two things, namely from the eye and form to the mind and dharma. Because there is an object, if the past and future do not exist, then the consciousness directed towards them will have no object and will not be related to the object. Because there is a result, if the past does not exist, then in the next life there will be no result of past actions. Therefore, the past and future exist. Furthermore, because they say they exist, everything wants to say that they exist. Those who say that everything that has happened in the past, future, and present exists are the Sarvastivadins. Others are the Vibhajyavadins. Who are the Sarvastivadins? They are of four kinds: things, characteristics, states, and other changes. Things change is Venerable Dharmatrāta, who says that when the Dharma enters into all times, things change.
