No. Similarly, virtue should also be applied in the same way. Actions done differently from that are not accumulated. If it is said that giving to a stupa with attachment is for oneself, then how can merit arise if there is no enjoyer or receiver? The merit arising from giving to a stupa is like the four immeasurables, such as loving-kindness, without a receiver. Just as loving-kindness and the like have no receiver or benefit to others, but are transformed into merit by the power of one's own mind, so too, even if a virtuous person has passed away, having faith in them will transform one's own mind into merit. If it is said that the fruit of giving in a good field is a satisfactory seed, then if one gives in a bad field, will the fruit not become unsatisfactory? Because the cause and effect continue without error, even a bad field produces excellent fruit. Even in a bad field, it is seen that the seed does not produce an erroneous fruit. Just as from an ordinary seed, an ordinary sweet fruit will grow, so too, even in a bad field, the fruit of the seed of giving planted with the excellent intention of benefiting others will only produce a satisfactory fruit, and not an unsatisfactory one. Having spoken of the fruit arising from giving, next we will speak of the fruit arising from discipline: immoral discipline is the form of non-virtue, abandoning that is the two kinds of discipline. That is, what is abandoned by the representational and what is abandoned by the non-representational. Discipline is not merely abandoning immoral discipline, but also what the Buddha has prohibited, and what is not the nature of immoral discipline, that is, what the Bhagavan has prohibited, such as untimely food, abandoning these two is also discipline. Discipline has been briefly explained. It possesses four pure qualities. The cause of that discipline did not bring benefit, relying on its antidote and the four. Immoral discipline, as previously said, did not bring benefit. The cause of immoral discipline did not bring benefit because attachment and other afflictions and near afflictions did not bring benefit. Relying on the antidote to immoral discipline is because of relying on mindfulness. Relying on tranquility is because of sorrow.
