The six realms and one consciousness of mind merge into one, so in substance they become seventeen or twelve realms. Although this is the case, however, in order to well establish the basis of the sixth, it is considered that there are eighteen realms. If the five bases of the five consciousness realms are the eye realm, etc., then there is no other basis for the sixth consciousness realm of mind. Therefore, in order to well establish the basis, the mind realm is taught. Thus, by establishing the six sets of basis, dependent, and object, it becomes eighteen realms. Among them, these aggregates have encompassed all conditioned phenomena. The aggregates of grasping have encompassed all defiled phenomena. The ayatanas and realms have encompassed all dharmas. In short, one should know that the aggregates and ayatanas, and one realm, have encompassed everything, that is, the form aggregate, the mind ayatana, and the dharma realm have encompassed all dharmas. These encompassments, no matter where they arise from, are through their own nature, and one should know that they are not through other entities. Why? Because dharmas do not possess other entities. Therefore, whatever is not possessed cannot be encompassed by it. If asked: Since there are two eyes, ears, noses, etc., wouldn't it become twenty-one realms? It won't become, because of what? Although there are two eyes, etc., the type, scope, and consciousness are the same, so it is one realm. Among them, the type is the same because both are the nature of the eye. The scope is the same because the objects of both are forms. The consciousness is the same because both are the basis of one eye consciousness. Therefore, the eye realm is one. Similarly, ears and noses should also be understood in this way. For the sake of beauty, two appear. Although the eye, etc., realms are one, two appear in order to beautify the basis. The aggregates, realms, and ayatanas have been explained. Here, I will speak about what the meaning of aggregates, realms, and ayatanas is.

It should be understood in this way: the meaning of aggregates, entrances, and realms is the five aggregates, twelve sources, and eighteen realms. The meaning of aggregates is the meaning of the five aggregates. Mind and mental events are the meaning of entrances, which is the meaning of the twelve sources. The meaning of realms is the meaning of the eighteen realms. Realms are also places of origin. Furthermore, why did the Bhagavan teach the three teachings through the means of the aggregates and so forth? Answer: For the sake of the three reasons of the disciples' ignorance, faculties, and inclinations, the three teachings of the aggregates and so forth were taught. The ignorance of sentient beings is of three types: some are ignorant by clinging to mental events as a whole "self"; some cling only to form; and some cling to both form and mind. Faculties are also of three types: sharp, medium, and dull faculties. Inclinations are also of three types: concise, intermediate, and extensive inclinations. Therefore, the three, the five aggregates, the twelve sources, and the eighteen realms, were taught to them in order. Furthermore, why are other mental events gathered into the aggregate of formation, while feeling and perception are made into separate aggregates? Answer: Because they are the root of disputes, the cause of cyclic existence, and the cause of sequence. Among mental events, feeling and perception are separate aggregates. The root of disputes is twofold: excessive attachment to desire and excessive attachment to views. The main causes of these two are feeling and perception, respectively. Because of experiencing the taste of feeling, one becomes attached to desires; because of inverted perception, one becomes attached to views. These two are the main causes of cyclic existence; clinging to feeling and having inverted perception causes cyclic existence. Also, because they are the cause of the sequence that shows the cause of the sequence of the aggregates, it should be understood that these two are made into separate aggregates. Then, why is the unconditioned taught in the twelve sources and the eighteen realms, but not in the five aggregates? The unconditioned is not spoken of in the five aggregates because it has no practical meaning. Because when the unconditioned is spoken of in the five aggregates, it is neither form nor consciousness.
