Also, whoever on that day goes for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and receives the vow of the Upavāsa, then the vow of the Upavāsa will arise in that person; otherwise, it will not. The Sutra says: Just by taking refuge, it is said to be a layperson. If just by going for refuge one becomes a layperson, then the Kashmiris say that without vows one cannot become a layperson. So, what is said in the Sutra like? There is no contradiction in this. Like this: Having vowed to be a layperson, only then will the vow arise. Just by vowing to be a layperson, the vow of layperson arises in this person. Even if the vow is obtained, in order to know the bases of training, like teaching a Bhikshu. Just as in order to let those who have already obtained the vows of Bhikshu and Śrāmaṇera know, 'You will keep this and this,' and make them hold the bases of training, so it is with a layperson, so there is no layperson without vows. If everything is kept, then how about practicing one part, etc.? If all laypersons abide in the vows of laypersons, then what about the laypersons who practice one part, practice one side, practice mostly, and practice completely, as the Bhagavan said? It is said that it is spoken from guarding. Whoever guards the bases of training is said to practice that, but otherwise, it seems that everyone abides in the vows. All the vows, small, etc., are as desired. Small, medium, and large are actually due to the mind at the time of taking. Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, what do they go for refuge to? Whoever goes for refuge to the three, that is, the Dharma that makes one a Buddha, the non-learning and both, and Nirvana. Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha, that is, goes for refuge to the non-learning Dharma that makes one a Buddha. Those are also retinues including the knowledge of exhaustion, etc. The form body has no difference in the former and later lives. Whoever goes for refuge to the Sangha, that is, goes for refuge to the Sangha.

Taking refuge is to practice and not practice the Dharma, because by obtaining it, one becomes a Sangha because the eight types of noble beings are not distinguished. Taking refuge in the Dharma is taking refuge in the cessation that arises from the individual examination of the Dharma of Nirvana, because the cessation of afflictions and suffering in the minds of oneself and others has the same nature. Even so, because the nature is not different, it is said that one takes refuge in all the Buddhas, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The meaning of refuge is also the meaning of protection, because by relying on it, one can be permanently and certainly liberated from all suffering. Furthermore, why is the basis for abandoning non-celibacy established in other precepts, while abandoning sexual misconduct is established as the basis for training in the lay precepts? Because sexual misconduct is extremely shameful, easy to abandon, and can be obtained. Sexual misconduct is extremely shameful in the world. For householders, it is easy to keep the precepts from sexual misconduct, and even the noble ones can obtain the precepts of not engaging in sexual misconduct. Therefore, this basis for training is established. If someone, even though they are a layperson, takes a wife, can they also obtain precepts from that? Or can they not? They can obtain them, because they will obtain temporary precepts. How can one not break the precepts? In this way, the precepts are obtained as they are promised, not obtained from the continuum. The precepts of these people are obtained as they promise to abandon sexual misconduct. Therefore, without sexual misconduct, the precepts will not be broken. Furthermore, why is only abandoning falsehood established as the basis for training, and not divisive speech and so on? Because of those three reasons: falsehood is extremely shameful, easy to abandon, and can be obtained. If all the trainings have been transgressed, one will fall into falsehood. If all the trainings have been transgressed, when asked, one will say, "I have not done such a thing," and this will become close abiding, because one will fall into falsehood, and no matter how one transgresses, one will contradict oneself.
