These are the explanations beginning with "four." Among these, "cause" refers to the five causes. The five causes, excluding the efficient cause, are the conditions of cause. Minds and mental factors that have arisen, the immediately preceding homogeneous [condition], except for the last [mind] of an Arhat, the minds and mental factors that have arisen are the immediately preceding homogeneous condition. The objective condition is all phenomena. Appropriately, the objective condition for eye consciousness and so forth is form and so forth. The objective condition for mind consciousness is all phenomena. The efficient cause is explained as the master. The efficient cause is the condition of mastery. Furthermore, since these conditions perform actions, upon what state of phenomena do they act? Briefly, among the five types of causal conditions explained earlier, two causes act upon cessation. "Cessation" refers to the present, because it is directed towards cessation. Among these, the co-emergent cause and the concomitant cause act, because these two act upon the co-emergent result. The three act upon arising, which refers to the future, because it is directed towards arising. Among these, the equipotential cause, the pervasive cause, and the ripening cause act, and these are the only causal conditions. The other conditions are the opposite of these. The immediately preceding homogeneous condition acts upon arising in order to differentiate. The objective condition acts upon cessation because it is apprehended by the present mind and mental factors. The dominant condition, because it abides in the nature of non-obstruction in all states, its action is that itself. The conditions and their actions have been explained. Furthermore, what phenomena are produced by how many conditions? Four produce mind and mental factors. Mind and mental factors are produced by four conditions, as appropriate. Three produce the two attainments. These attainments, excluding the objective condition, are immediately preceding homogeneous [conditions] of mind because they arise from the manifestation of mind. Others are produced by two. Other non-associated phenomena and form are produced by cause and

They arise from autonomous causes and conditions. All phenomena also arise solely from causes and conditions. Not from Isvara (自在天,Lord,Īśvara,自在者) etc., because of reasons such as sequence. If Isvara etc. were the sole cause, all beings should arise simultaneously, yet things appear to arise sequentially. Isvara etc. are also without beginning, so they do not depend on others, and giving (to beings) should also be without beginning, and because the giver has no need, Isvara etc. are not the cause. Furthermore, if it is said that others arise from both, then how are the elements the causal conditions of the elements? Its cause is two kinds of elements. This is the definition of the term "cause of elements." Through homogenous cause and co-emergent cause. Five types of phenomena transformed from elements. The elements are five causes transformed from the elements, they are the generating cause, because they arise from it. It is the dependent cause, because it makes the arisen (things) conform to the elements. It is the abiding cause, because it is the support. It is the sustaining cause, because it is the uninterrupted cause. It is the increasing cause, this is simply dividing the acting cause into five types. The three transformed (phenomena) mutually, through co-emergent cause, homogenous cause, and ripening cause. Among them, the co-emergent cause is the actions of body and speech following the mind, which are mutual, not others. The homogenous cause is. The ripening cause is the ripening of the actions of body and speech, whatever it may be, such as the eye. Those (phenomena) of the elements are one. The form transformed from the elements is the ripening cause of the elements, that is, the actions of body and speech cause the elements to ripen. Mind and mental factors are the same without difference, this is said to be the immediately preceding condition, but it is not said what arises after which mind, so that should be said. In short, these twelve minds are like this: desire realm mind, virtuous and non-virtuous, obscured and unobscured. There are four minds in the desire realm: virtuous mind, non-virtuous mind, obscured and indeterminate.
