meaning. When it is together with consciousness, then it can be seen. If that is the case, then is it only through the consciousness based on the eye that one can see? It is not the consciousness based on it. There is no ability to ascertain "seeing." Why? Because what is obstructed, form is not seen. Because forms obstructed by walls and the like are not seen. If consciousness could see, then because it is unobstructed, it would also be unobstructed by walls and the like, so even obscured forms should be seen. But they are not seen, therefore consciousness does not see. Just as the eye sees, so the ear hears, the nose smells, the tongue tastes, the body touches, and the mind cognizes. Does one eye see all forms, or do both eyes see? There is no certainty about this. Both eyes see, because seeing is clearer when separated. Both eyes see, and seeing becomes clearer when the two are separated. Because the basis is interrupted, interrupted things are not seen, because consciousness does not dwell in the object. Do the eyes and so on contact the object, or do they not contact it? The eye, mind, and ear do not contact the object. For example, forms are seen from afar, but eye medicine that is in contact with the eye is not seen. Sounds are heard from afar. The mind, because it is not material, cannot contact. The remaining nose, tongue, and body are synonyms for contacting the object. Furthermore, do the eyes and so on apprehend objects that are equal to their own size, or do they apprehend objects that are equal or unequal? For the time being, those that are said to contact the object, the three, nose and so on, are thought to apprehend equal objects. The number of sense organ atoms that come into contact with the same number of object atoms then generates consciousness. The eye and ear are uncertain. The mind, because it is not material, cannot be fully measured and cannot judge. Now, these six realms of consciousness have been explained, so what are their objects now?

If the support is like the three times, past, present, and future, is it so? The answer is no. The final support is cessation. The support of mind consciousness is the mind that has just ceased. The five are: they are also co-emergent. Among them, the co-emergent support of eye consciousness is the body from eye to body consciousness. Their ceased support is the mind. Moreover, the arising of consciousness depends on both, why is it said to depend only on the eye, etc., and not on form, etc.? Because they Change, therefore, due to changeability. The support is the eye, etc. Because the eye, etc., change, the consciousnesses also change, because they follow benefit and harm, and clarity and unclearness. Because form, etc., change, they do not change accordingly, therefore only they are the support. Moreover, if they know form, etc., why is it called eye, etc., consciousness, and not form, etc., consciousness? Because their support is the eye, etc. Therefore, due to non-commonality. They reveal consciousness. The eye cannot become the support of other consciousnesses, but form can become the object of both mind consciousness and eye consciousness, and the same is to be understood up to the body. Therefore, because it is the support and is non-common, only they can reveal consciousness, and not form, etc., like the sound of a large drum and the sprout of barley. Moreover, where does the body reside so that the eye can see the forms? Are the body, eye, form, and consciousness all in the same place? Or are they in different places? The answer is: everything has differences. To this, what is certain is: the body is not below the eye. Action, eye, and form, etc., are the five grounds from the desire realm to the fourth dhyana. Eye consciousness is in the desire realm and the first and second dhyana grounds. Among them, which is the ground where the body is located? Is it that ground, or a higher ground, but not a lower ground.
