They wield power over those who create suffering. What are the five faculties such as pleasure? What are the eight faculties such as faith? These five and eight are: From defilement and purification, They wield power in order. The five such as pleasure wield power over defilement, because they cause desire and so on to increase. The faculties such as faith wield power over purification, because they cause purification. Others say: For one's own object and all objects, Six faculties because they wield power over objects. The five such as the eye wield power over their respective objects. Because there is no hearing of sound, therefore, as a common cause, the mind faculty wields power over all objects. Therefore, they are each faculties. Because they wield power over female and male, From the body, female and male faculties Are distinguished. The meanings are not different. The nature of female is female. The nature of male is male. Moreover, the tones and so on of male and female are different. To abide in the same class, and to wield power over defilement and purification, The life force and the feelings, And the five such as faith are also considered faculties. The life force is to abide in the same class, the feelings are over defilement, and the five such as faith wield power over purification. Thus, they also suppress defilements and lead to the path. To obtain nirvana and so on from above, They wield power, Called the faculty of the unknown, the known, and the one with knowledge. Among them, the faculty of the unknown wields power over obtaining the faculty of the known, the faculty of the known wields power over obtaining the faculty with knowledge, and the faculty with knowledge wields power over obtaining complete nirvana. The word "etc." is to show other categories, that is, to abandon the defilements to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, and to wield power over abiding happily in the present dharma, hence these three faculties. If it is a faculty because it wields power, then ignorance and so on do not need to be supplemented, because for what reason?

Thus, this is the basis of mind and its distinctions, places and pervasive defilements, collections and purifications, however many there are, and the faculties are also that many, as desired. Among these, the basis of mind is the six faculties, and the six sense bases are also the foundation of sentient beings' substance. The female and male faculties distinguish them as female and male. The life faculty causes dwelling. The feelings cause pervasive defilement. The five, such as faith, cause the collection of purifications and so forth. The three cause purification, therefore, ignorance and so forth are not desired as faculties. Or, the basis of entering, and birth, dwelling, and near use, when fourteen are thus reversed, the faculties are other. The basis of entering is the six faculties. Birth is from the female and male faculties, because it is born from them. Dwelling is the life faculty, because it causes dwelling. The feelings cause near use, therefore they are the fourteen faculties. In that way, the others are reversed. Why? The basis of reversal is faith and so forth. Birth is the faculty of knowing all. Dwelling is the faculty of knowing all. The faculty endowed with knowing all causes near use. Therefore, the faculties are so many, and for that reason, their order is also thus. Among these, the faculties that have not been shown elsewhere are shown, the body feeling that is not tranquil is the faculty of suffering. That which is called not tranquil is that which harms. Tranquility is happiness. The body's feeling of tranquility is the faculty of happiness. That which is called tranquility is that which benefits. In the third dhyana, that of the mind is the faculty of happiness. The third dhyana is the mind's feeling of tranquility, that itself is the faculty of happiness. In other places, that is mental happiness. Other than in the third dhyana, in the desire realm and the first and second dhyanas, that which is the mind's feeling of tranquility, that is the faculty of mental happiness. The mind's dissatisfaction is displeasure, and equanimity is the middle.

English

That which is neither mind, nor tranquility, nor non-tranquility, is called the middle, i.e., the faculty of equanimity. If asked, is it of the body or of the mind? It is said: It is of both. Why is this combined into one faculty? Because of non-discrimination. The happiness and suffering of the mind mostly arise from discrimination, but not of the body. Due to the influence of the object, even Arhats arise, therefore, those separate bodily and mental equanimity arise naturally only without discrimination, so the bodily and mental are called one faculty. On the paths of seeing, cultivation, and no-more-learning, the nine faculties are three. Mind and pleasure, mental pleasure, and equanimity, and the five such as faith, these nine faculties are called three faculties on the paths of seeing, cultivation, and no-more-learning. On the path of seeing, it is called the faculty that makes non-omniscience into omniscience. On the path of cultivation, it is omniscience, because it is to abandon the subtle remaining parts. On the path of no-more-learning, it is the faculty endowed with omniscience, because that is its own nature. Among these faculties, how many are with outflows? How many are without outflows? Three are without defilements. The three just mentioned, such as the faculty that makes everything known, are without outflows, because defilements are synonyms for outflows. Form, life, and suffering, etc., are with outflows. The seven form faculties, and the life faculty, and the faculties of suffering and displeasure, are generally with outflows.
