Because (the Buddha) said that after abandoning me, the previous suffering has also been abandoned, and pleasant and unpleasant feelings have also ceased, therefore, there is no pleasant feeling in the third dhyana. (Since this is the case,) then only joy is pleasant, but pleasure is not. (Question:) In the dhyanas with afflictions, are there also those limbs as mentioned before? (Answer:) No. What is missing in those? (Answer:) For those with afflictions, joy and pleasure, superior understanding and correct knowledge, mindfulness, and equanimity and pure mindfulness do not exist. In the first dhyana, there is no joy and pleasure born from detachment, because it is not detached from afflictions. In the second dhyana, there is no superior understanding, because it is defiled by afflictions. In the third dhyana, there is no mindfulness and correct knowledge, because it is completely confused by the pleasure of having afflictions. In the fourth dhyana, there is no equanimity and completely pure mindfulness, because it is defiled by afflictions. Some say, extreme pliancy and equanimity. Some say that there is no extreme pliancy in the first and second dhyanas, and there is no equanimity in the third and fourth dhyanas, because these two are the grounds of many virtues. The World Honored One said that the third dhyana is with movement because it has faults. (Question:) Because of being liberated from the eight faults, the fourth dhyana is without movement. (Question:) What are those faults? (Answer:) Investigation and analysis, and breaths, etc., and the four such as pleasure. The fourth dhyana does not have those eight faults, therefore it is said to be without movement. (Question:) Are the feelings that exist in the dhyana of meditative absorption also present in the dhyana of arising? (Answer:) No, however, in the dhyana of arising, there are pleasant, pleasurable, and neutral feelings, as well as neutral, pleasant, and pleasurable feelings, and neutral, neutral feelings. These are the three or four aggregates of consciousness in the dhyanas, as well as the feelings of the mind. Although the three aggregates of consciousness, investigation and analysis, are not present, in the second dhyana and so on, the consciousness of the body, eyes, and ears will arise to recognize. Whatever exists belongs to the first dhyana. In the second dhyana and so on, it is the first dhyana.

The consciousness of the eye, ear, and body of their respective realms, and all phenomena that give rise to recognition, become manifest. That is not an unpredicted affliction, because it is not afflicted, because it is free from desire. Because it is inferior, it is also not virtuous. How are right concentration and the formless realms attained? Not associated with it, free from desire, purity is attained from arising. From the lower realm, being free from desire, or from arising in the lower realm, purity is attained. Through the uncontaminated freedom from desire, it is attained from the state of not being associated with it. It should be combined in this way. Through the arising of afflicted decay. If from that, only freedom from desire, it can be obtained from complete decay. If it is obtained from arising in the lower realm. From what substance of absorption does what arise? In the sequel of the uncontaminated, between the three above and below, virtue arises. By mentioning virtue, it includes the pure and the uncontaminated. In the sequel of the substance of uncontaminated absorption, the purity and uncontamination of one's own realm arise, as well as the two realms each of the upper and lower realms. Just as it is said in the sequel of the uncontaminated, it is the same from purity. The afflictions of one's own realm are also the same. In the sequel of the pure, especially the afflicted of one's own realm arise. The remainder is the same as from the uncontaminated. From the afflicted arises self-purity, and affliction. In the sequel of the afflicted, the pure and the afflicted of one's own realm arise. The only purity of the lower realm will also be pleased with the purity of the lower realm afflicted by afflictions. Considering the time of entering absorption, only the afflicted of one's own realm arise from the pure and the afflicted. From the purity of death transference, all afflictions arise. At the time of death transference, in the sequel of the pure obtained from arising, the afflicted of all realms arise. From the afflicted, the upper realm does not arise. At the time of death transference, in the sequel of the concentration and formless realms of the afflicted, the afflicted of one's own realm and the lower realm arise, but the upper realm does not. From all the pure, the substance of uncontaminated absorption does not arise either. Like this, the part of pure decay.
