Even if asked, why didn't the Blessed One prophesy? Because among the wandering Begas, many sinful views would be found, so even if asked three times, I did not prophesy. Kashyapa, if I prophesied to the wandering Begas who asked, "I exist," then the statement that "all dharmas are without self" would be unreasonable. If I prophesied to the wandering Begas who asked, "I do not exist," then the wandering Begas would go from being without self before to having self now, so that those who were already completely ignorant would become even more ignorant. Kashyapa, saying "I exist" would become permanent, and saying "I do not exist" would become annihilation. The Tathagata, having abandoned those two extremes, teaches the Dharma of the Middle Way, that is, this arises because of this, this is born because of this. For example, with ignorance as the condition, there are actions, and so on, extensively, it will be completely ceased. The world is permanent, the world is impermanent, the world is neither permanent nor impermanent, etc., regarding the fourteen things that were not prophesied, it is recorded in the ninth chapter of the Long Agama Sutra, and in the fifth chapter of the Abhidharma-kosa, it is written in the form of a verse with "one head and distinctions." Similarly, regarding the wandering speakers, when the Blessed One was dwelling in the Kalanda Grove of the Bamboo Forest Garden in Rajagriha, the wandering speakers went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, together with the Blessed One, and so on, said this to the Blessed One: Gautama, is the world finite? He replied, I do not prophesy that the world is finite. Gautama, is the world infinite? Is it neither finite nor infinite? Is it a case of neither finite nor infinite? He replied, I do not prophesy that the world is infinite, both finite and infinite, and neither finite nor infinite. Gautama,

When asked, "How is it with the end and the boundary?" he says he does not answer. And if asked, is the world without end? Is it also with an end? Is it also without end? Is it also neither with an end nor without end? he says he does not answer. Then what does he answer? He says, "I have directly known, and having directly known, in order to completely exhaust suffering, in order to bring suffering to an end, I teach the path to the hearers." If Gautama himself, having directly known and directly known, teaches the path to the hearers in order to completely exhaust suffering and to bring suffering to an end, does this path necessarily liberate all the world? Or only one part of the world? When he asked this, the Blessed One remained silent. The wandering ascetic asked the Blessed One this question two or three times. If Gautama himself, having directly known and directly known, teaches the path to the hearers in order to completely exhaust suffering and to bring suffering to an end, does this path necessarily liberate all the world? Or only one part of the world? When he asked this, the Blessed One remained silent for two or three times. At that time, the venerable Ānanda was behind the Blessed One, holding a fan and fanning the Blessed One, and said: "Ascetic, the question you asked the Blessed One earlier, you are now asking in another way. Therefore, the Blessed One does not answer the question. Ascetic, therefore, if an analogy is explained to wise men, they will understand the meaning. Listen. Ascetic, for example, this is a city on the border of the kingdom, completely surrounded by walls and very strong, with only one gate. The gatekeeper is a wise, intelligent, and knowledgeable man, who is well-versed in the wisdom of examining those who come there. He goes around the city and searches, but he cannot find even a small second gate in that city. Then, he goes around the city and searches, but he cannot find even a second gate that a cat could enter. Ascetic, moreover, the gatekeeper knows

For example, a creature like this has entered my city. Although he has not seen such a thing happen, the gatekeeper has arisen with such correct wisdom: all coarse creatures that enter the city and the events that occur, all come through this gate alone; there is no other. Similarly, although the Tathagata does not think whether this path will liberate the entire world or just a part of the world, the Tathagata arises with such correct wisdom: all cessation of suffering, that is ceasing, and that will cease, all are accomplished by this path; there is no other. Then, the wandering ascetic Venerable Kundgawo was overjoyed and rejoiced at what was said, and rose from his seat and departed. The Blessed One said: In the future, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, Maitreya, will appear. In the tenth chapter of "The King and the Assembly Perfectly Endowed," the Sutra of the Former and Latter Ends, the abbot Ma-aga, starting from the former end, casts the fourth chapter of the Commentary Treasury into this place, which has been written. Starting from the latter end, it is the prediction of the Blessed One: Monks, when the lifespan of humans reaches eighty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Gone to Bliss, the Unsurpassed, the Tamer of Beings, the Guide of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One Maitreya, will appear in the world, just as now the Blessed One, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Gone to Bliss, the Tamer of Beings, the Guide of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, I have appeared in the world. He will be with the gods, with the demons, with Brahma, and with the ascetics and Brahmins.
