I do not speak in that way. If someone comes to me and asks, 'What is the cause of craving?' I should predict in this way: 'Craving arises from feeling, and grasping arises from craving.' Bhikkhu, what does 'grasping one, grasping one' mean? If I say 'grasping one, grasping one,' would that question become perfect? I do not speak in that way. Bhikkhu, do you not say 'grasping one'? Venerable sir, it is not so, I do not speak in that way. If someone comes to me and asks, 'What is the cause of grasping?' I should predict in this way: 'Grasping arises from craving, and becoming arises from grasping.' Bhikkhu, what does 'becoming, becoming' mean? Venerable sir, if I say 'becoming, becoming,' would that question become perfect? I do not speak in that way. Bhikkhu, do you not say 'becoming, becoming'? Venerable sir, it is not so. I do not speak in that way. If someone comes to me and asks, 'What is the cause of becoming?' I should predict in this way: 'Venerable one, this becoming is the manifestation and accomplishment of future rebirth, and until it fully occurs, what has occurred and exists is the six sense bases. Contact arises from the six sense bases, feeling arises from contact, craving arises from feeling, grasping arises from craving, becoming arises from grasping, birth arises from becoming, and from birth arise aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and agitation. These will fully occur, and this great mass of suffering will also fully occur.' Why didn't the Blessed One predict whether the body and life are the same or different? The Blessed One was dwelling at the Kalandaka bird sanctuary in the Bamboo Grove in Rajagaha. At that time, the wanderer Beliṭṭha's clan went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, together with the Blessed One... up to the wanderer Beliṭṭha's clan.

Then he said to the Blessed One: "Gautama, is the body itself the life? Be'u, I do not say that the body itself is the life. Gautama, is there another life other than the body? Be'u, I also do not say that there is another life other than the body. Gautama, when asked whether the body is the life, he says that it should not be answered; when asked whether there is another life other than the body, he also says that it should not be answered. The Blessed One said, it is not surprising that the Śrāvakas in the past, those who have transcended time, were born in a certain place, and were born in another place. Be'u is also the same, it is not surprising that the Śrāvakas of the Tathāgata who have transcended time were born in a certain place, and were born in a certain place. Gautama, when this body is completely abandoned, and the mind-made body is reborn as another sentient being, then the body and life become different. Be'u, I also say that birth is related to upādāna, and not without upādāna. Gautama, how do you say that birth is related to upādāna, and not without upādāna? Be'u, for example, fire burns when it is related to upādāna, and does not burn when it is not related to upādāna. Gautama, I have also seen fire burning without upādāna. Be'u, how can fire burn without upādāna? Gautama, for example, a large pile of fire burns completely, burns very fiercely, becomes one fire, and from that one fire, a flame of wind is ejected far away, at that time, it burns without upādāna, and the burning of the flame spreads and burns without upādāna. Be'u, that is also what I say is related to upādāna, and not without upādāna. Gautama, what is the upādāna of that? Be'u, at that time, upādāna is considered to be wind, wind is upādāna, so fire burns, and because of the upādāna of wind, the flame spreads. Gautama, when this body is completely abandoned, and the mind-made body is reborn as another sentient being, then upādāna

What is appropriation? How should appropriation be understood? I say, for Beu, craving is appropriation. By the appropriation of existence, beings abide; by the appropriation of craving, they are called beings. Gautama, from beings who delight in appropriation, are defiled by appropriation, arise from appropriation, and seek appropriation, the Thus-gone One, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, has fully awakened to all dharmas. Gautama, we have many things to do. Beu, when you know the time has come, go. Then, the wandering Beu rejoiced and was delighted by what the Blessed One had said, and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Ananda, if I were to declare to the wandering Beu, 'There is a self,' the origin of this matter is in Rajagriha. Then, the wandering Beu went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, exchanged various pleasant and comfortable conversations with the Blessed One, and then said to the Blessed One: 'Gautama, is there a self?' When he said this, the Blessed One remained silent. 'Gautama, is there no self?' When he said this, the Blessed One also remained silent. The wandering Beu asked the Blessed One twice, three times: 'Gautama, is there a self?' When he said this, the Blessed One remained silent. 'Gautama, is there no self?' When he said this, the Blessed One also remained silent. Then, the wandering Beu thought: The ascetic Gautama, though asked by me twice, three times, did not answer, so he rose from his seat and left. At that time, the venerable Ananda, holding a fan, was behind the Blessed One, fanning the Blessed One. Then, the venerable Ananda, knowing that the wandering Beu had left for a long time, said to the Blessed One: The wandering Beu, twice, three times
