At the time, craving accompanied by the desire for joy is the cause of rebirth. From this, no longer desiring those joys, completely abandoning them, individually ceasing, disappearing, exhausting, being free from attachment, ceasing, becoming peaceful, and not appearing. What is the bearer of the burden? It is said to be a person, that is, a sentient being, with a name such as this, a lineage such as this, a clan such as this, food such as this, experiencing such happiness and suffering, living for a long or short time, residing at this time, and whose lifespan ends here. Monks, I have explained in detail what I have said about the burden, the grasping of the burden, the abandonment of the burden, and the bearer of the burden. The Blessed One spoke thus, the Well-Gone One spoke thus, and the Teacher further spoke thus: Having abandoned the extremely heavy burden, one will not take up other burdens again. Taking up the burden is suffering, abandoning the burden is happiness. Having completely abandoned all cravings, all bonds are exhausted, having fully understood what should be taken up, one will not go to rebirth again. Thus it is said. Regarding the statement "There are no spontaneously born sentient beings," for the time being, I will quote the verses from the Middle Length Discourses and write them in the sixth chapter of the Great Treasury of Forty Dharmas, "The path of training has eight branches," and extract from it as follows: What is wrong view? It is the view that something does not exist. There is no giving, no receiving, no offering, no good conduct, no bad conduct, no ripening of the fruits of good and bad conduct, there is no this world, there is no other world, there is no father, there is no mother, there are no spontaneously born sentient beings. In the world, there are no Arhats who have truly awakened and truly practiced, who have exhausted birth and cultivated pure conduct. What should be done has been done, and one no longer knows any other existence than this. Thus, for the Dharma nature seen in this world and the other world, one fully understands with one's own realization.

Saying 'there is no mother' etc., this is called wrong view. In the world, when a person is born, it is said that they are born. The setting is in Shravasti. Monks, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, for the sake of compassion for the world, for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans, one person is born in the world. Monks, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, for the sake of compassion for the world, for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans, one person is born in the world, who is it? It is the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One. Monks, in Varanasi, in the Deer Park at Isipatana, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One turned the Wheel of Dharma in twelve aspects and three rounds, and the monk Shariputra followed it. Monks, in this world of gods, demons, Brahma, ascetics, and Brahmins, no one truly followed the Wheel of Dharma that I turned, except for the monk Shariputra. Monks, by my turning the Wheel of Dharma, the monk Shariputra, without clinging, had his mind liberated from all defilements. Thus it was said. From 'The Reality of Emptiness', from the second chapter collected from the gathering of the six sources, from the end of the verses such as 'The Past Ones', it appears in the fifth chapter of the Abhidharmakosha, where it is explained that thinking about the past and future is taught. In the third chapter, it is also written: 'No self, only aggregates.' As it is said in the Sutra of Dabo-born, the setting is in Shravasti. Monks, these four foods sustain beings and benefit those who seek existence. What are the four? Coarse and fine morsel food, second is contact food, third is mental food.

Fourth is the food of consciousness. At that time, the venerable Devadatta was standing behind the Blessed One, fanning the Blessed One with a fan. Then, the venerable Devadatta said this to the Blessed One: Venerable, is consciousness eaten as food? Devadatta, if I were to say, "Consciousness is eaten as food," would that question be well answered? Devadatta, I would not say, "Consciousness is eaten as food." Venerable, do you not say that consciousness is eaten as food? Devadatta, that is so; I do not say that. If someone were to come to me and ask, "By what cause does consciousness arise?" I would answer thus: Consciousness is for the manifestation of future rebirth and until it fully arises. What has arisen and exists is the six sense bases. The cause of the six sense bases is contact. Venerable, what is "contact, contact"? Devadatta, if I were to say "contact, contact," would that question be well answered? I would not say that. Venerable, do you not say contact? Devadatta, I do not say that. If someone were to come to me and ask, "By what cause does contact arise?" I would answer thus: The cause of the six sense bases is contact, and the cause of contact is feeling. Venerable, what is "feeler, feeler"? Devadatta, if I were to say "feeler, feeler," would that question be well answered? I would not say that. Venerable, do you not say feeler? Devadatta, that is so; I do not say that. If someone were to come to me and ask, "By what cause does feeling arise?" I would answer thus: The cause of contact is feeling, and the cause of feeling is craving. Venerable, what is "craver, craver"? Devadatta, if I were to say "craver, craver," would that question be well answered? I would not say that. Venerable, do you not say craver? Devadatta, that is so.
