"Monks, in this case, a physician who extracts the root knows that this disease is such and such, and eradicates it by means of actions that prevent its recurrence, and knows that it will not arise again. Monks, in this way, a physician who extracts the root is skilled in the means of eradicating the disease and preventing its recurrence. Similarly, the Thus-Gone One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, is called the unsurpassed physician who extracts the root, possessing four branches. Which four? Monks, the Thus-Gone One truly knows, as it is, 'This is suffering, the noble truth'; truly knows, as it is, 'This is the origin of suffering'; truly knows, as it is, 'This is the cessation of suffering'; truly knows, as it is, 'This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering.' Monks, a physician who extracts the root does not know the medicines for eradicating the root of suffering, does not know the medicines for eradicating the root of suffering of birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair. Monks, the Thus-Gone One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, knows the medicines for eradicating the root of suffering, knows the medicines for eradicating the root of suffering of birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, is called the unsurpassed physician who extracts the root." Thus spoke the Blessed One. These are true for the noble ones, therefore they are called the noble truths. The setting was in Shravasti. Monks, have you grasped the four noble truths that I have taught? Then another monk rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined, bowed to the Blessed One in the direction where he was, and said to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, I have grasped the four noble truths spoken by the Blessed One." Monk, how have you grasped the four noble truths that I have taught? The Blessed One
