It is written as "because it is appropriate." Because the past, etc., were not mentioned. Regarding "because it was not mentioned," the beginning was in Nyen (Śrāvastī). Then, the Blessed One called to the monks, saying: Monks, once, not long after I had attained complete perfect enlightenment, I was dwelling alone in solitude in proper concentration under the Bodhi tree on the bank of the Nairañjanā River. At that time, such a thought arose in my mind, and I fully realized in my mind: Disrespect is suffering, and without a master and without the power to control fear, one will completely lose great meaning. Having respect is happiness, and having a master and having the power to control fear, one will completely accomplish great meaning. If there is anyone among gods, demons, Brahmās, the multitude of ascetics and Brahmins, and the world of gods and humans who is superior in the perfection of discipline, the perfection of concentration, the perfection of wisdom, the perfection of liberation, or the perfection of the vision of the wisdom of liberation, they should be respected, regarded as a teacher, remembered, and offered to. They should be respected, regarded as a teacher, remembered, and offered to, and one should completely rely on them and abide. Again, I thought: Whoever should be respected, regarded as a teacher, remembered, and offered to, I should respect, regard as a teacher, remember, and offer to, and completely rely on and abide by, who is superior to me in the perfection of discipline, the perfection of concentration, the perfection of wisdom, the perfection of liberation, or the perfection of the vision of the wisdom of liberation? Among the gods, demons, Brahmās, the multitude of ascetics and Brahmins, and the world of gods and humans, there is no such person. Otherwise, I should myself realize the Dharma and thereby attain complete perfect enlightenment.

Whatever I should honor, respect, regard as a teacher, remember, and offer to the Dharma, I have honored, respected, regarded as a teacher, remembered, and offered, and I will rely on it and abide in it many times, thinking thus in my heart. Then, the lord of a thousand Brahmas, knowing my thoughts, as quickly as a strong man extends or retracts his arm, disappeared from the world of Brahma and sat before me, saying these words: Blessed One, it is so! Well-gone One, it is so! Disrespect is suffering, without a master and without fear, one will completely decline from great meaning. Respect is happiness, with a master and with fear, great meaning will be completely fulfilled. Whatever the Blessed One should honor, respect, regard as a teacher, remember, and offer, the Blessed One has honored, respected, regarded as a teacher, remembered, and offered, and completely relied on and abided in it many times. In the Blessed One, the perfection of discipline is especially excellent, or the perfection of samadhi is especially excellent, or the perfection of wisdom is especially excellent, or the perfection of liberation is especially excellent, or the perfection of the wisdom of seeing liberation is especially excellent. In the world of gods and humans, with gods, with demons, with Brahmas, and with the multitude of ascetics and Brahmins, there is no one else. Otherwise, the Blessed One himself has directly known the Dharma and has become perfectly enlightened. Whatever the Blessed One should honor, respect, regard as a teacher, remember, and offer to the Dharma, the Blessed One should honor and respect the Dharma, regard it as a teacher, remember it, and offer to it, and rely on it and abide in it many times. Why is that, monk? Because the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, the Thus-gone Ones, the Arhats, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones, who appeared in the past, also honored and respected the Dharma.

They honored the nature of Dharma with respect, reverence, and offerings. They made it their teacher, kept it in mind, and made offerings, then closely attended and resided. Whatever Buddhas, Bhagavat, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, who will appear in the future, they too will honor, respect, and make offerings to the nature of Dharma, making it their teacher, keeping it in mind, making offerings, and they will attend and abide. The Bhagavat, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha of the present time also honors, respects, and makes offerings to the nature of Dharma, making it their teacher, keeping it in mind, making offerings, then closely attends and resides many times. Then, the possessor of a thousand Brahmas spoke this verse at that time: Whatever Buddhas of the past, whatever Buddhas who have not yet come, who destroy much suffering, whatever Buddhas of the present, all of them respect and closely abide by the sacred Dharma, and others will also abide, this is the nature of the Buddhas. Therefore, in this desire realm, those who desire the great self, after recalling the Buddha's teachings, should respect the sacred Dharma. Then, the possessor of a thousand Brahmas was overjoyed and rejoiced, he bowed to my feet with his head, and then disappeared, so it was said. Monks, regarding the matter of "burden and the bearer of the burden," the origin is in Shravasti. Monks, the burden, the bearer of the burden, the abandonment of the burden, and the carrying of the burden will be explained. Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will explain. What is the burden? It is the five aggregates of clinging. What are the five? They are the aggregate of form clinging, feeling, perception, formation, and the aggregate of consciousness clinging. What is the bearer of the burden? It is the craving that is combined with joyful desire, which is the origin of rebirth, and is very pleased with it. What is the abandonment of the burden? It is
