Those with land, those with near views, the virtuous, the extremely virtuous, the famous, the near famous, the name-givers, and the gods of good fame have passed away. Then, many monks, early in the morning, wearing their robes and carrying their bowls, entered the River-place for alms. While these many monks were practicing alms in the River-place, many people in the River-place passed away. The virtuous Kadataka passed away, as well as Katamakataka, Kadakasha, the practitioner, the near practitioner, the viewer, the near viewer, the virtuous, the extremely virtuous, the famous, the near famous, the name-giver, and the masters of good fame. Having heard this, they finished their alms round, prepared and ate their food, washed their bowls, placed their robes and bowls to one side, washed their feet, and approached the Blessed One. Having approached, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Sitting to one side, these many virtuous ones said to the Blessed One: "Venerable, here we, many monks, wearing our robes and carrying our bowls, entered the River-place for alms. Venerable, while we, many monks, were practicing alms in the River-place, many people in the River-place passed away. Monks, the virtuous Kadataka, having abandoned the five pervasive bonds that are in accordance with the final part, is of the nature of a non-returner in this world, and having been born, he will pass into complete nirvana, therefore he is a non-returner.

And also the teachers of Near Fame, Name Giving, and Layman Fame, having abandoned the five pervasive bonds corresponding to the final part, are born in this world with the nature of non-retrogression, and will not return for the sake of complete extinction. Monks, in the Water River, more than three hundred monks passed away, having abandoned the five pervasive bonds corresponding to the final part, are born in this world with the nature of non-retrogression, and will not return for the sake of complete extinction. Monks, in the Water River, more than three hundred monks passed away, having abandoned the three pervasive bonds, and having thinned out the three of desire, hatred, and ignorance, will return once to this world and will eventually put an end to suffering, becoming once-returners. Monks, in the Water River, more than five hundred laymen passed away, having abandoned the three pervasive bonds, are certain to attain perfect enlightenment, possessing the nature of non-falling, at most in the seventh existence, having connected the consciousness seven times in gods and humans, will eventually put an end to suffering, becoming stream-enterers. Monks, do you ask the Tathagata about the deceased and those who have passed away? Venerable ones, it is so. This does not touch the Tathagata, nor does it harm the Tathagata. However, beings will eventually die and pass away, what is surprising about this? Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, the Dharma nature of all things exists. The Tathagata himself directly realized this Dharma nature, perfectly awakened, and skillfully establishes, posits, reveals, explains, shows, and clarifies: This arising, that arises; this being born, that is born. For example, with ignorance as the condition, actions arise; with actions as the condition, consciousness arises; with consciousness as the condition, name and form arise; with name

Because of form, I have the six sense bases, and because of the six sense bases, I have contact, and because of contact, I have feeling, and because of feeling, I have craving, and because of craving, I have grasping, and because of grasping, I have becoming, and because of becoming, I have birth, and because of birth, I have old age and death, and sorrow, lamentation, crying, suffering, distress, and disturbance all arise. Thus, this great mass of suffering will completely arise. Because this does not exist, this does not arise; because this ceases, this ceases. For example, when ignorance ceases, actions cease; when actions cease, consciousness ceases; when consciousness ceases, name and form cease; when name and form cease, the six sense bases cease; when the six sense bases cease, contact ceases; when contact ceases, feeling ceases; when feeling ceases, craving ceases; when craving ceases, grasping ceases; when grasping ceases, becoming ceases; when becoming ceases, birth ceases; when birth ceases, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, crying, suffering, distress, and disturbance all cease. Thus, this great mass of suffering will completely cease. Monks, furthermore, I will teach a category of Dharma called the "Mirror of Dharma," listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain it. What is the category of Dharma called the "Mirror of Dharma"? Having understood the Buddha, faith arises, this is a category of the Dharma of the Mirror of Dharma; having understood the Dharma and the Sangha, faith arises, this is a category of the Dharma of the Mirror of Dharma; the precepts pleasing to the noble ones are a category of the Dharma of the Mirror of Dharma. This is called the category of the Dharma of the Mirror of Dharma. Monks, what I said, "I will teach a category of Dharma called the 'Mirror of Dharma,'" I have now explained in detail. Thus spoke the Blessed One. The so-called "abiding in the truth of no-self" is said to be a place of view. This comes from the first verse of the summary verses of the seventh Middle Length Discourse, from the sutra that shows and explains defilements. From the second chapter of the Abhidharmakosha.
