To perceive happiness in suffering is a distorted perception, which comes from the second sutra of the fourth verse in the collection of four-line verses. In the fifth chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, one should consult the sutra on distorted perceptions. It says, "Whatever is the basis of happiness." The context of this is in Shravasti. Monks, there are five bases, namely the basis of happiness, the basis of suffering, the basis of joy, the basis of sorrow, and the basis of equanimity. So, what is the basis of happiness? What is the basis of joy? One should refer to the feeling of happiness. What is the basis of suffering? What is the basis of sorrow? One should refer to the feeling of suffering. What is the basis of equanimity? One should refer to the feeling that is neither happiness nor suffering. If someone sees these five bases as they are with correct wisdom, they will abandon the three bonds and fully understand them. What are these three? Namely, the view of the aggregates, the adherence to vows and asceticism, and doubt. One who has entered the stream has the nature of not falling back, is destined to attain perfect enlightenment, and after at most seven rebirths, having taken rebirth seven times among gods and humans, will eventually end suffering." Regarding "Mahānāma suffering in a single form," and so on. The Blessed One was residing in the Monkey Pond monastery in Vaishali. At that time, a Licchavi named Mahānāma made efforts to see the Blessed One and make offerings every day. Then, Licchavi Mahānāma thought, "When I go to see the Blessed One and make offerings, the Blessed One and the monks have not yet risen from meditation until dawn. I should go to the Amrāvatika Seven Mango Grove." So, Licchavi Mahānāma went to the monastery of the Amrāvatika Seven Mango Grove.

The Perfectly Radiant One, surrounded by a multitude counted by the number of the Sangha, and many who pretended to be like the noble ones, with about five hundred supporters as their main focus, was dwelling there. Their retinue was speaking individually with clamor, noise, great sounds, and high-pitched voices, telling animal stories and gathering together. The Perfectly Radiant One, seeing Licchavi Vimalakirti coming from afar, instructed his retinue to be quiet, saying, "You all be quiet for a moment! You all be silent! The Shravaka of the Shramana Gautama, Licchavi Vimalakirti, is coming. Among those white-clothed householders who dwell in Vaishali, the Shravaka of the Shramana Gautama, Licchavi Vimalakirti, is the most excellent. He desires quiet, delights in quiet, is tamed by quiet, and praises quiet. He will think that he will come when he knows that his retinue is quiet." Having said these words, the retinue became silent. Then, Licchavi Vimalakirti approached the place where the Perfectly Radiant One was. Having approached, he engaged in various pleasant and comfortable conversations with the Perfectly Radiant One, and then sat to one side. Having sat to one side, Licchavi Vimalakirti said to the Perfectly Radiant One, "O Radiant One, I have heard that you Radiant Ones teach the Shravakas thus: 'The afflictions of all sentient beings are without cause or condition; sentient beings are afflicted without cause or condition. The purification of sentient beings is also without cause or condition; sentient beings are purified without cause or condition.' O Radiant One, if someone speaks thus and prophesies thus, would you Radiant Ones rebuke them? Or would you say that they are speaking untruthfully, or that they are speaking the Dharma of you Radiant Ones, and that their speech is in accordance with the Dharma? If someone comes and speaks the Dharma and in accordance with the Dharma in the Sangha, would that not be a place of defaming the Dharma?"

The Namer spoke thus: 'Such prophecy is true; one should not slander it, nor speak untruthfully, but be a Dharma speaker, prophesying in accordance with the Dharma. If some of them come and speak or follow the Dharma in the assembly, such Dharma should not be considered a place for reproach. Why is that? O Namer, I also see it this way and speak thus: The defilement of sentient beings is without cause or condition; sentient beings are defiled without cause or condition. The purification of sentient beings is without cause or condition; sentient beings are purified without cause or condition.' Then, the Licchavi Namer Light-protector Completer neither became angry nor rejoiced at what was said, but rose from his seat and left. Then, the Licchavi Namer went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Licchavi Namer fully reported to the Blessed One all the other things that Light-protector Completer had said together. After reporting thus, the Blessed One said to the Licchavi Namer: 'O Namer, Light-protector Completer is a speaker of Dharma who does not examine, is not in accordance with its nature, and does not separately investigate. In any case, foolish, ignorant, unclear, and unskilled children would say this: The defilement of sentient beings is without cause or condition; sentient beings are defiled without cause or condition. The purification of sentient beings is without cause or condition; sentient beings are purified without cause or condition.' Why is that? O Namer, the defilement of sentient beings is with cause and condition; sentient beings are defiled with cause and condition. The purification of sentient beings is with cause and condition; sentient beings are purified with cause and condition. O Namer, the defilement of sentient beings
